penile implant scheduled

I had an AMS 700 LGX implant put in on December 17th so I am about 4 weeks post op. Here is what I can share:

My surgery lasted for about two and a half hours. At least that is how much the hospital charge for the procedure room.

Prep wise you are completely dehaired.

In my case my surgeon did the incision just above the penis and my incision is about 2 inches long.

The implant is left partially inflated for the first six weeks to make sure the chambers are full and heal right. I would estimate my inflation at about a 50% erection.

When I woke up they had put an athletic supporter on me. I had also bought one at a sports store. You will want to have two and the one from the sports store was a lot more comfortable then the hospital one.

I was in recovery for only 45 minutes but that was because they did not move me to a room but to a surgical holding room for the night. Since I was being released early the next morning there was no need to place me in a room. I was released at 8:00 AM. Also, they did not tube me for the surgery so they are not as concerned about any breathing complications.

They put an ice pack on my incision, penis and scrotum all night and I kept it on the next day. They told me after the first 24 to 36 hours the ice pack did not do any good.

I was able to eat solid food about four hours after the surgery. I also got very hungry in the middle of the night and the nurses had some sandwiches which they gave me. In recovery they gave me sprite on ice.

I had a catheter all night which was removed about 6:00 AM. As soon as I urinated after the catheter removal they released me.

I did not have a lot of pain and only asked for a pain pill to help me sleep. I got about four hours of sleep. I did take a pain pill before heading home since the drive was 2 hours.

My post op instructions were to stay flat on my back as much as possible for the first 5 days and keep my feet elevated above my heart to decrease swelling. This is definitely what you need to do. I took pain pills every 4 hours for the first two days. I then cut the pills in half and took those the next two days. The next two or three days after that I only took them at night and extra strength Tylenol during the day.

The pain and recovery was worse then what I had with my prostatectomy. When the swelling started going down on the thrid day post op the pain got a lot better. One week post op I was driving again. The penis and scrotum both swell a lot and bruise. I was instructed to pull down on the pump often. I did that it did hurt to do it.

My wife had to out my socks and underwear on the first few days as I could not bend at the waist. After 5 days I was told I could stop wearing the athletic supporter but to wear briefs for the next four weeks. I wear briefs anyway so that was not a change.

Two weeks post op I was pain free. At my two week post op appointment the PA checked the pump placement and told me it was good and I could stop pulling down on it. I was glad about that as my scrotum was sore on that side.

I did have pain when urinating right at the tip of my penis. At the two week appointment they said it was a catheter abrasion. It has gotten better but I still have some discomfort.

The partial inflation is a little irritating as it gets in the way when bending or squatting. It is worse with jeans and better with casual pants.

What I like so far is my penis feels a lot younger then it has in the past three years. Of course the partial inflation keeps it from shrinking but I know I will not have the turtle necking like I did have after the surgery.

I go back on February 10th for my six week post op appoitment and will be shown how to activate the implant. I then have a three month post op appointment.

By the way my surgery was done by Dr. Doug Milam at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. On the day on my surgery I was the second implant he did on that day.
