We received the hard copy of Harvey's post op path report today and it says his prostate weighed 72.1 grams. I am sure at the time of the biopsy in December it weighed 32 grams and we were told it was normal size. Has anyone ever heard of the prostate doubling in size. And the surgeon never said it was enlarged, in fact he said it came out easily. Something doesn't sound right. I am going to call to check on the weight at the time of biopsy on Monday. Comments? Thoughts?

The weight from the biopsy would be an estimate (perhaps better said guestimate) based on size and density determined through some sort of CT or other scan. It could be no more than an estimate, as it was still firmly housed. The weight of the removed prostate at final pathology might include attached tissues, seminal vesticles, etc., and is the weight of an object on a scale. You would have to know more about the path. laboratory's procedures.
I had no estimate of weight or size before surgery.

The weight of the prostate given at biopsy is an estimate based on the sonogram of the area. The weight given in the surgical path report is the true weight. When my husband had his biopsy, the urologist gave us some "pictures" from the sonogram with teeny-tiny print at the bottom estimated the weight of the gland. The surgical path report that we have did not state any weight but it did give dimensions of the various "parts."

As they have said, the biopsy weight is an estimate, made by viewing the ultrasound image. In my case, mine was 72 gms. at biopsy, but 110 gms. actual weight when physically weighted at surgery.
