Urinary retention/blockage after Foley removal?

What is normal urination after foley removal? Should I be able to urinate freely (but just unable to stop until Kegels give control)?
I am blocked; can't "go"; have urinary retention like when I had BPH before. Urine drains indirectly, passively, and spasmodically (squirts at various times), but I can't "go" when I try (standing or sitting). Very blocked and very frustrating and uncomfortable retention. Can't void completely. Is this normal?? Not what I expected at all. Doctor says as long as urine is draining, I am not "in retention." But it sure feels like retention! He says it may take a while for bladder to "adjust"; but it has been almost a week with no improvement. I think he is wrong. What are others' experiences with this? Were you able to pee right away?

Yes - More then freely would be better then barely at all.

I could pee like a race horse right out of the shoot when my cath came out.

Are you in pain from the retension? If so - call your doc back and explain it to him better.

my stream came back incrementally. really slow at first when things hurt, then got pretty forceful and finally came to a median point that it is now. i had good contol from the start but what you are describing doesnt sound like retention more like your body is still adjusting to things and leaking. i think i`d be on the phone to the doc again and have a sit down.

Dallas: Thanks; this is what I've said I've heard/read from a number of others, but is certainly not my experience.

T-dog: Thanks especially also, because your's is first experience I've heard like mine,and gives hope that maybe it is just slow readjustment like you, and my doctor, say. Doc is national expert, but man of few words and low activism, so a bit difficult to know whether he's seen it all before and knows well what is going on and that it just takes time, or whether there really is something not quite right that should be being evaluated. Think its time for a further talk. Thanks.

I couldn't have held water the first few weeks after the catheter was removed if my life had depended on it. I did get some spray and scattered stream, but they believed that was due to scar tissue, and it cleared up over time.
Getting a urine sample for tests was tough - I suggested they wring out a pad.

Sounds like a call to the Dr. is appropriate.
