The wife and I went to Atlanta on the 18th and checked into the Marriott next door to St Josephs.  On the 19th did all the pre-admission/pre-op and Dr Shah removed the prostrate about 1100 am on the 20th.  He said he was able to spare the nerves and everything went "smoothly".  He did say, however, the prostrate was so large he had to do some reconstruction to the bladder.  We checked out of St Josephs on the 21st and went back to the Marriott until this morning(23rd) when we headed home (about 2 1/2 hours).  Dr Shah said he wanted to think about how long he wanted to leave the cath in due to the extra work so right now it's open as to when the cath comes out-he was considering April 30 or May 3 so now it's all about getting over all the soreness and used to the cath!  It sure felt good to get back to the mountains!!  Thanks to all for your help in getting me to this point.

Congratulations, and welcome to the other side! Sounds like you had a pretty decent surgical experience, thats good. Probably feels real good to be back home, but better to recoup on your own turf.

Do the usual now: walk a lot when you can, drink lots of water, use those stool softeners, and if needed, use your pain meds - all that will help you heal faster and better.

On the bladder part, some longer cath time might be in your best interest, since extra surgical work was needed. My original cath after surgery was for a full 30 days, due to complications in that area. A little patience now, might make it easier for you down the road.

Chatuge - wishing you all the best on the other side - this is a great place to be since you have a host of new friends and buddies / buddettes who have already gone through your part of the journey - and help you understand and cope with the ups and downs of recovery - here's to a steady recovery and lots of zero's down the road!

Welcome to our side of the fence. All the walking, water, and use the pain meds when needed are the same suggestions I have, so already done.

There, that wasn't so bad.  Two weeks is pretty standard for cath if anything unusual is encounterd.  No matter how uncomfortable it is, you don't want it to come apart later.

Be sure and get a written copy of the surgical path report, and a copy of the surgeons report.  They are good to have in your files.

Congrats, had mind done on the 14th, the longer the cath's in the easy it is to deal with, just glad that whole surgery thing is behind us.

Catheters? From many posts I read here, to me it's unclear which catheter is involved.
There are two methods for draining urine.....the penile and the pubic catheters. From what I read here many guys are having to deal with a penile catheter for up to a week or more. While my prostate was three times normal size and additional time / stitches required to reattach the urethra to the bladder / my penile catheter came out the day after my Henry Ford robotic proststectomy and the pubic catheter came out ten days later. While the penile catheter was in a very short...it was a "pain in the penis" for the few seconds it took for it's removal! Would imagine the longer it's in, the more painful it is when it's removed.

3+4=7 prior to and post op.
nerves spared, margins clean, ct and bone scans clear.
zero pads around home but an occasional sneeze or heavy lift / leak. Wear a pad when away from home for many hours just in case!!!
