Pain at wound site?

I am 3 months post-op. A few days ago, while lying down, I noticed it was extremely painful to touch my abdomen at one particular spot -- basically where one of my robotic knife wounds resides. My abdomen seems hard at that point.

It does not look red or infected. It's worse when I am prone; less when I am standing. I just have to touch it lightly to have the pain. I suspect this might be a scar tissue problem. It is better today, but not totally.

Any ideas?

scar tissue- maybe, or even a rogue nerve that has been damaged and is responding wrong?

Mel, When is your next Dr appt.? Which spot is tender. Can you discribe the location?

Mel, not an uncommon issue, even as far out as your are, scar issue most likely, if it continues to bother and/or hurt you enough, would be worth telling your doctor about. I have the one long scar from open surgery, and even at the one year mark, there was this one little area that would always hurt to the touch. I showed my doctor, he said it would just take additional time to heal. And when I asked if there was anything we could about the hurting part, and this is funny now, not at the time, he simply said "stop touching it, and it won't hurt."

Well, the spot is about an inch to the left where a normalo bellybutton would be. I do not have a bellybutton due to an umbilical hernia, repaired at birth.

However, I am now noticing some bulges in the area. It might just look that way since the scar is somewhat indented. I hope I do not have an umbilical and/or incisional hernia.

I do have a doctor's appointment tomorrow on another matter, so I'll have him look at it. Hopefully, this is much adieu about nothing.

The pain is just a mild discomfort. As David said, if I don't touch it, it doesn't hurt!

I had something of the like at 3-4 months out- they told me it was the heavy internal stitches breaking up, leaving fragments that "stabbed" when I rolled over in bed.

How big is the bulge? Is it closer in size to a pencil eraser or a golf ball?

That "wound" would be the incision through which the bag containing the removed prostate and materials were drawn through. Don't have a clue as to why surgeons choose this particular area!? I'm 2.5 months out now and that incision is ugly and hard as a rock. Still have some minor pains around a couple of the six incisions from time to time depending on what I do / muscles I use.


74 years old. Vattikuti prostatectomy 2/10/10 Henry Ford. Gleason 3+4=7 confirmed / five week PSA undetectable / no pads nights and if I'm around home / pad if I'm out in public just in case / lifting something heavy quite apt to get a leak / 25mg viagra nightly.

There is a definite bulge, not an eraser or golfball. It is larger but looks more like a slight swelling. There is definite discomfort there too. No longer any sharp pain to the touch.

I'm just not sure what is going on. It might be scar tissue irritation, but I am concerned that it might be a hernia. Hopefully, my family doctor will shed some light on this. I seem him tomorrow, late afternoon.

Hey compiler...I agree with others in that it's probably scar tissue. My surgery was done by Dr. Peabody (Menons protege). "that" incision for me is rather ugly as it is on a friends who had his removal performed by Menon a year ago. Tis indeed UGLY, HIGH, and not a nice straight line like the others.
