Loss of libido is quite tolerable while on HT. It is not the worst side effect I felt.
The worst side effect was depression. That one stung me pretty hard. When things change so much it becomes very easy to let depression sneak up on you. This is the mental side effect that can be quite negative.
The second worst side effect is weight gain. It caused me to go on blood pressure meds and while it didn't have this effect, diabetes can become a factor over long term. This is the worst physical side effect.
Minor stuff:
I lost all my black body hair.
I didn't have the effect of gynecomastia but breast enlargement in the long term cases is possible.
Good news:
Once I recognized how depression had set in, I was able to get it under control. It was a continuing battle but a conscious mind really helped.
Intermittent HT helps reduce all of the other symptoms. After I stopped HT my body hair and libido returned and my weight stabilized.
I finally lost the urge to watch HGTV and redecorate the house...
Long term HT can be devastating. There are a few cases of strong tolerance, but that is not the norm. This is why almost all oncologists will try to stop the HT at some point. But long term HT can lead to other issues including various physical ailments and even death by other causes. Intermittent HT is very effective at avoiding the severe issues.
I am now officially one year out from stopping HT. about
6 months approaching near normal T levels.
A true blessing indeed if my November numbers come back solid!
Edited addition:
HT is not a cure for cancer and eventually it will fail to be effective. There are studies being done to compare HT versus intermittent HT to see if it extends the HT effectiveness. Still no verdict yet!
