Hi friends,

Had my catheter out yesterday----and very, very fortunate that have achieved a pretty good level of continence already---and yes I realize how lucky I am.

It stings when I first urinate, and the flow is not that steady--starts and stops a bit--doesn't seem to completely empty, and have to go often--3-4 times last night. Just wondering if this is normal. Totally realize that am very early in the healing and all. Just looking for any others experiences.

Thanks again to each and everyone here----you all are great friends---I think of you all the time and wish you well. And even though not PC---you are in my my prayers. :-)

I think your situation seems normal for someone who just had the catheter removed

The first few times I urinated after my catheter was removed it stung the whole time--not terribly painful but a little painful. Then the 2nd day it stung just a little only at the end of urinating and the discomfort was not bad at all after a day or two and any discomfort gradually subsided.

The first couple of nights I got up 4-5 times to pee and that gradually subsided over the next week to 1-2 times then down to an average of 1 time at night. Prior to my surgery I would get up 1-2 times every night, so getting up just once was an improvement.

The only thing I never had that you have is the feeling of not being empty. I had that frequently prior to surgery but never afterwards.

You sound like you're on the same healing path as I took. Don't be surprised if your leakage gets a bit worse as the swelling goes down inside. I went from almost dry and having to strain a bit (with stinging) to start flow, to leaky to dry as my body healed.

my standard advice for the burning part: pyridium. cheap.. generic. works fast and well.

Husband had pain, not stinging, and it lasted several weeks. Finally subsided without meds. Another side effect we were not prepared for by the med lit.
