Close Call with Tornado

Had a close call last night here in Easley, SC.  Bad weather moved in with a passing cold front, and the home town got hit by a F-1 tornado.  I heard a bunch of roaring and the wind was howling outside my house, rain was horizontal.  The tornado dropped down about 1/3rd of a mile beyond my house and cut a 2 mile path through our downtown area.  No injuries, thank goodness, but a lot of damage.  It was about as close as I would like to be, I was one step away from ducking in my basement with a flashlight.

Glad to here there were no injuries. Hopefully recovery from the damage will be somewhat fast.

OK, joke aside, having been once just a few hundred feet from a passing tornado, they are no fun.

I checked your news link, and once again, we have to be thankful that damage was limited to property, not people. For those who don't live in tornado alley, this is something that is over before you realized it was happening. We talk about life-changing -

Yeah, where she works, once they get a tornado warning, they have to move all patients in the hallways away from the windows. The twister was about 8 miles away from there, so no danger. In my basement, which is finished, have an bathroom away from outside walls and no window of course, safest place in the house

I'm glad you are safe and no one was seriously injured.  I had to do a doubletake when I saw the subject of your post.  I didn't expect a reference to the other tornado of my life.  The first being a real one, the second being PC.

My wife was home back in 2004 when an F3 came through south central PA.  Yeah, they're not supposed to come through there.  She was injured really badly and almost didn't make it.  Our local Med Center put her back together though and we are very thankful.  Below is link to a pic of our neighborhood.  Our house was one of the ones in the middle of the pic (where there is no house.)

Be thankful for every day.  I didn't really need a refresher on that one.

Hi Dave.

Glad to read that you're feeling relatively good and that you are not to stressed (like me) about your next PSA test result. That the tornado missed you maybe a sign that your luck has finally changed and that you'll have brighter future ahead of you.

thanks mag, and with all honesty, not even a hidden fear or thought on my PSA, decided to be pragmatic about it, what will be will be, not going to be controlled by it again.

jerry, glad your wife was ok. been through a bunch of hurricanes before, most recently Hugo here in 1989, hit our town, different one, with 130 mph hour winds even though we were 60 miles inland. this tornado was over so fast, now they are saying 105 mph winds and damage path was about 125 yards wide, i would agree after surveying the damage first hand today.

So, which is worse? Tornado, hurricane, or earthquake? I have had some experience of all three. I've had a tornado knock down trees in my back yard when we lived in the midwest, but the fear factor was
reduced because we didn't know what hit us until we heard that that the tornado had torn a roof off a business nearby. We were in a hurricaine in Orlando, and the main effect was to
shorten the lines at Disney World for a day or two. Moving to the west coast, we were in a 6.8 earthquake. Now, that was terrifying--diving under the desk, books falling off the shelf,
feeling the building sway (which they are supposed to do if they are built correctly). A tornado is deadly if you are one of those unfortunates who get hit head on. Our friends in New
Orleans can tell us how bad a hurricane can really be. For me, though, earthquakes are it. If it hits, you definitely experience it, and things can fall on your head, maybe the whole building. This is the only downside of living on
the west coast. Sooner or later the big one is going to come, but you don't know when. You can't predict it with PSA levels.

Thats for sure Postop, livened up an otherwise boring evening around here, lol.

I live through an earthquake in Morroco as a kid, that killed thousands. Been through several major huricanes, huricanes take so long to pass, this twister was over in like 45 seconds to a minute.

We've had a few earthquakes around here in the last couple of years...Glad I didn't feel them..There's something really wrong even thinking about the ground under your feet moving smhair
