Despite what you may read here, there is no wonder drug/herb even for PC that has not spread

There is no cure, but if the patient has not already had hormone therapy (also known as androgen deprivation therapy or ADT or chemical castration) it would likely help. There are some advanced and experimental chemotherapy approaches and one so-called "vaccine" called Provenge but these too are not a cure; they can buy some time maybe months maybe years, and they can also reduce pain and improve quality of life. Radiation can be used to reduce pain and improve quality of life. Can you share some more information on what has been done for the patient already? There are a lot of people here with extensive experience who can help suggest treatments, but you need to provide more info.
Again, there is no cure but there are treatments that might help extend life or reduce discomfort. Each case is different.

Welcome, Ronzo. I've very sorry to hear about the advanced state of your father's prostate cancer--with "spread to lungs, bones and organs" as you related in another post. A phrase I've used here many times is that "there is (unfortunately) no such thing as a 'Magic Pill' ". Currently, the standard of care for men with metastatic prostate cancer that has spread and is progressing despite low levels of testosterone is every 3 week docetaxel, given with prednisone, plus zoledronic acid (Zometa) specifically for bone mets...but deviations from the standard of care may be appropriate depending on the next level of your father's case details. edit : reworded Post Edited (Casey59) : 1/5/2011 8:34:44 AM (GMT-7)

Sorry to say Ronzo that I know of no magic pill. Although last week I was offered the opportunity to buy some very expensive chinese cancer curing mushroons. I do like mushrooms, but I passed. Really the thing to do if you haven't already is get to a very good medical oncologist and try to get into a clinical trial.

I say keep looking and harder, there is maybe nothing the medical community says is any good except the stuff they sell with high profits. There is a Journal article on Genstein plus something else added (my memory is faded at the moment), but the problem was figuring out how to get the concentration amount of Genstein needed (not just from eating a little) from their studies on this combo thing....looked pretty interesting and it was against hrpca (I might be able to find the Journal article and post it if wanted).
There are other articles on things that you may care to read about
and contemplate on PCa. There may be things that slow doubling times or assist you...but stopping it or huge reversial maybe there is nothing. Some people have used Boron in some form and had some successes with it, one guy in Canada used DCA (non FDA approved and no patents...get it from England-cheap) but his psa's definitely slowed down using this and were running away otherwise...so it had an effect. (I don't know how long, I got the info from a PCa brother on PHML forum). So, I say question everything and always....do you think the big Pharma's would tell you that anything other than what they mfg. or sell is any good for any ailment??? They don't sell chicken soup-LOL! (not enough money in it)
There are drugs that outperform Lupron and such against hrpca....but is glanced over and not made well known to the public and almost never heard from most uro-docs. How long and how well they work are always the next questions. Some patients with known mets do way better (time wise) than others, some have done many protocols for control and defied some of the predictions by docs and others, like saying you have 1-3 yrs. and other such rehtoric. Many have surpassed such dire predictions. New drugs now offer more protocol choices and responses...who knows how you might fare individually, don't place all your bets on an abstract. I know I wasted my time writting this, but it helps my typing skills too.
One guy in my support group is using Leukine right now through Dr. Scholz and is in year 13 now with PCa that was not being controlled, until he started using this....has been well over 1+ year on this and he claims no side effects (go figure), it is expensive but insurance may cover it, his did, you refrigerate this and self inject this stuff, specialized Pharmacies have it. I know of one in Michigan (Ann Arbor). Alteast he is enjoying his life and maybe gaining longer duration and says he has quality of life too....not a bad combo when in this area of PCa.

I have read several articles about
having your testicles removed, a friend of mine did this had great improvement. He told me these was routinely done in the 50's and 60's. He is still alive and doing well. Should my cancer come back I'm going to consider this route. It was a 4 hour operation start to finish with very little pain, home that day. Sounds bad but he is alive and not taking pain medication, pain was gone in about
8 hours.

No wonder drugs.
Testicles were removed in the early days for some patients with advanced PCa after it was found that testosterone levels affect the rate at which the cancer grows, nowadays they try to achieve the same effect on your body using hormone therapy, ie merely chemical castration.

In chapter 33 of Dr. Chodak's new book, he lists all the possibly good supplements along with the potentially dangerous ones..The following are the ones that MIGHT offer some benefit..
Astragalus, Chinese herb.
Bitter almond, little is known but safe
Flaxseed & Flaxseed oil, some slight benefit
Ginseng, another long-shot but safe
Grape seed extract, works in the lab..
Green Tea, yes, extracts, no..
Milk thistle, shows promise, safe
Pomegranate juice, proven to increase PSA doubling time..
Saw Palmetto, proven worthless..
Turmeric, safe, possibly effective
Zyflamend, herb blend, might work
Lyc
opene, possibly effective
Vitamin D, yes..
Vitamin E, ask your doctor first, possible problems..

That surprized me Fairwind being in his book glad you pointed it out (especially cause of his ultra conservative words on everything), but there is a longer list than that of similar items to add on that type of list. He didn't get it all....(lol). If one wishes to look at supposedly 'everything' the list is no doubt longer. I hope some 'nut case' pioneer proves that some wild concoction has real value against hrpca, and I will not be totally surprized. I hope those types are out there....the little engines that could. One guy used Boron in some form and got additional time in using it, heard that years ago on a forum at www.prostate-help.org

My dad is super depressed on the zoladex, just stares into space, has dark thoughts, I don't know what to do!
But for possible treatments that are alternatives we are exploring
HYPERBARIC OXYGEN and VITAMIN C injections. We ordered the book "outsmart your cancer" which outlines 12 alternative therapies and how to evaluate them, so we hope something can come of it.
I have to say he is almost like he used to be and has a pep in his step when he comes out of the oxygen treatments....

tryin2helpmydad, first, welcome to HW. Sorry you have to be here. Thanks for sharing that info about
your Dad. I am guessing he just found he had cancer Dec. 22 and it was metastized then. No earlier tests or warning? That would be hard blow to take, both mentally and physically. I hope the HRT will provide relief and even reversal. Thanks for sharing with us. Keep us updated, please.

Thanks James,
Yes, he was diagnosed at 68 after having severe back pain and pain in his bones, they finally figured out that he had metast. prostatic cancer, strangely nothing had come up in his annual PSA exam last may, and he was his regular bouncy self all summer :(
have no idea why oh why this was not caught earlier.... but in my secret heart of hearts, I feel it might be connected to the fact that he was "made redundant" and was voluntold to retire at the end of august, this is just my feeling.
