Questions for after Foley removal.

I am having my foley catheder removed in several hours. What protection should I wear so I don't wet my clothing until things slow down. thanks in advance

I went in with a regular Depends expecting the worst. When I told the nurse that was what I had she said it was overkill and gave me just a medium pad to stick to my underwear that they had in the office.

I hope all goes well for you. The removal lasted about 1-2 seconds and was not bad. Pulling the bandaid off my arm from my last PSA blood test last week was worse.

Get to your nearest pharmacy and buy some male incontinence pads. Most pharmacies have a "house brand," or you can purchase a name brand like Depends. The doctor gave me a pad or two when he removed the catheter, but we had taken several with us just in case. Wear jockey shorts, not boxers.

Womens maximum adsorbancy Maxi-pads worked good for me until I figured out I didn't need anything 2 days later..

When they took mine out it was like a garden hose that I could not turn off. I had depends diapers plus some big pads and glad I did. Off course everyone is different but I planned for the worst and that what happened.

Had mine removed a couple of weeks ago at Mayo, and they gave me some Pampers Toddlers #3 which worked great. They fit the male anatomy just great and were very absorbent. Also, not too expensive. Thought it was a great idea. Good luck. Removal of my catheter was not near as bad as I had imagined.

Having had the honor of having 21 catheters in me over a 2 year period, not a one of them, ever hurt coming out. A lot of them hurt going in, but that's another story. Wear briefs, and at least have one pad with you in case one isnt handy.

Catheters removal should be painless, I had a superpubic under my naval that was stuck, It was removed in the operating room while I was awake. I was freaking out, Oddest feeling ever but no pain. Felt pretty stupid and the nurse razed the heck out me, had to laugh, for once the doctor was right! Went back to work 3 day later all okay.
However Foley's lost track of them , be repaired to leak, still painless!

When the balloon was opened, my cath literally fell out - zero pain.

On the other hand, I flooded the place. The exam table became lakefront property. I did take a Depends pant and a booster pad, both plus my pants were soaked through 20 minutes later whan I got home. Fortunately I had put an underpad in the car seat.

I took the pant & pad - the doc's office advised that they did not provide them.

You can get the Depends in packs of 6 now - in case you are optimistic. I was buying them in cases of 72 for longer than I want to admit.

Walgreens, Kroger, Target Affirm brands of guards are all the more absorbent of the men's type, and I suspect they are all the same manufacturer.

Was your urine pretty bloody after the cath was removed. Mine is.I'm talking within 2 hrs. Dont know if its the removal, my bladder infection or both. The baloon wasn't totally deflated and it hurt when the baloon hit the sphincter. Doc waited to make sure all the water from the baloon was out. After that no real problems/.

there can be blood in the urine after surgery - bits of stuff flaking off from the bladder and urethra - just imagine a drop of food colouring in a glass of water and you can see a similar effect --
- hopefully the UTI was taken care of prior to the removal of the catheter --
-sorry to hear about the hurry with the removal - that could have caused some of the discolouration of the urine too...
- you can expect blood and flakes and gunk coming out over the next couple of weeks - and it will diminish over time ....
-BUT if you have trouble - passing water ( peeing) ,or burning, etc... call your doctors ASAP

-wishing you all the best with any incontinence - and start work on your kegel exercises... mine were 20 reps - 5 times a day ....

It's not at all unusual for the urine to continue to have blood clots and such at this point. But keep an eye on it and note if it gets worse(if so call the doc), more likely it will get better.

Regarding getting the foley out, my nurse had me take a deep breath, then blow it out while she pulled. Wasn't pleasant, but wasn't too bad either.

Do you have a signature? I was wondering if you had da vinci or open, and how long the catheter has been in.

My cath was in 11 days. Should have been 10 but that was on Sunday, so I had to wait. I had open at Johns Hopkins.

What I will call "blood and debris" that may be in the bladder after surgery if often too big to pass out through the catheter as it can't fit through the hole at the balloon end, thus it only has enough space to "escape" after the catheter is removed.
You will thus be confronted by the need to keep drinking enough fluids to keep flushing the system, while at the same time learning about how much you do or do not leak/dribble which may make you feel like reducing the amount you drink.

Getting rid of the catheter and pipes and bags feels really good though, I hope this feeling si soon followed by the idea that your starting to regain control of the output aspect once more.
