The 4% death rate is the number of deaths from Prostate cancer to the total number of deaths from all causes. This is a number that is widely quoted by a number of sources. If the actual death rate is really 2.5mm men annually(which seems reasonable) then it doesn't make sense.
The 32,000 number of deaths was an extrapolation that never came to pass, although it was useful to get research funds and is still widely quoted.
The total number of PC deaths is 27,000 and the total number of men diagnosed with PC and still living is 2.3 million. 80% of these men are over 65 years old. To give some perspective 350,000 men die from heart disease and 89,000 from lung cancer.
