There has been a fair amount written about the apparent benefit of statins in reducing the incidence of prostate cancer and in extending PSADT.  Now this:  http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1464-410X.2011.10159.x/abstract;jsessionid=0439575BEDF54F66C9AC040A2F59F484.d02t02

Makes it hard to tell what is good and what is not so good.  I find this notion of "masking" disease to be one of the most confounding issues.  Is what you are doing actually benefitting  you, or just fooling you into a false sense of complacency by "artificially" reducing your psa?

My Dr put me on statins after my first "0.0" test, I asked about masking and she said it's possible but so far the indications are that it really may slow/stop BCR. I guess as with most things time will tell.

Too bad we're still the lab rats for so much of this disease.

- it appears the negative aspect is the potential (in the eyes of this one study) that the statins may mask the PSA level resulting in later detection of PCa.
-they still have to do their study regarding statins and post-op PCa ( my situation)

- my urologist / surgeon is pleased with my POST-OP PSA of 0.02 and is aware I am taking statins and I have graduated to once a year testing....

A significant decrease was found in the incidence of T3 cancers and thos with a Gleason score ranging 5-6. Researchers also found lower serum PSA levels and free/total PSA ratios in this population.

-even aspirin can mask PSA levels....
-oh yes, stay away from POM juice if you are on statins !

I am on statin and have been taking pom juice as well for more than a year with no problems. I asked my GP and my nutritionist (at UCSF) and both said this is myth. THere are no problems with statins and POM. The thing you have to watch out for with statins is if you drink a lot of grapefruit juice. Both grapefruit juice and statins are metabolized by the same pathway in the liver, so if you take both it means the body eliminates the statin more slowly, and so it builds up. It is as if you are taking several times the dose of statins that you think you are taking.

I tried to find my previous link to the bad interaction of Lipitor ( a statin) and pomegranate juice - and couldn't find it.....the sites I found today -> the nuts-and-twigs sites ( dated - 2006-7) said pom juice was bad & stated repeatedly: it alleges / supposedly/ similar to grapefruit /no proof yet that but ....

-when I talked to my pharmacist about pom juice and statins, he was not aware of any interaction ....

-one of the sites talked about immediate interaction, and like you, I have been taking it in very moderate doses - 3-6 oz a day with breakfast ( statin taken with food at evening meal)for over a year ....
-and I ain't dead yet ( nor any renal failure)...skull

-and my PSA actually went down smilewinkgrin - see signature below -
-so will go back to it... I actually like the taste.

It seems that anything you do to lower your cholesterol also seems to help PC.

Actually, I stopped zocor (too many SE) and I might request Lipitor.

Is the verdict that it is a good idea to be on a statin even after dx?
