Definitely a good read, a must read. The risks to the heart and diabetes, however shouldnt be taken lightly, depending on the overall medical condition of the patient. Also, and the article stresses this several times, the effectiveness is best indicated for those men in high risk categories.
The other possible advantage I gleaned, if in these high risk cases, by combining HT and SRT or ART, they could reduce the amount of gys of radiation, that could be a good side benefit, in less radiation - less chance of radiation damage.
Thanks for posting this link. It should be a keeper

>>As a result, many of the radiation oncologists performing these studies recommend a combination of short term hormonal therapy and radiation for men with INTERMEDIATE RISK prostate cancer. This recommendation, of course, is only valid if the risks of the additional hormonal therapy (heart risk, diabetes, osteoporosis) do not outweigh the benefits for a given patient.<< this was the case for me based on my biopsy. i think more guys in the intermediate range should be treated more aggressively initially. great series of articles, Fairwind. i'm glad to see that my doctors are current in their thinking. ed

Next month before I see my U-doc and R-doc I intend to see my PCP for a complete physical and blood work-up so We can evaluate what effect 6 months of HT has had on me..Armed with this information, I should be better able to determine whether to continue with the HT or not...Perhaps I could do another 6 months safely if I make some changes in my diet to keep the weight gain, blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol under control.. I think THAT's what increases the heart attack risk...
yes indeed, prostatedocs blog is worth bookmarking and keeping an eye on. He posts a new entry about
once a week..
