Reports Link ED Drugs To Hearing Loss. The UK's Telegraph (5/19, Bloxham) reported, "Viagra (sildenafil) and similar impotence drugs have been linked to hundreds of cases of sudden hearing loss around the world, including some in the" United Kingdom. "Forty-seven suspected cases of sensorineural hearing loss – a rapid loss of hearing in one or both ears – were linked to Viagra and related" medications Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil). "The researchers are not sure how Viagra might affect hearing, but it may be that the chain of chemical reactions it triggers have knock-on effects in the inner ear."

Six years ago, no ED drug involvement, in the space of 15 minutes my left ear "blew up" and my hearing was pretty much killed dead.

I was told it was a sudden increase in pressure in my inner ear that killed the nerves. (An MRI showed no brain tumor.) The pressure might have come from an infection, or a burst blood vessel -- i.e. a stroke.

I understand there are some very thin, fragile, blood vessels in the area. Don't know if that's true or not, but it may be.

If so, a drug that impacts on blood flow might contribute to an ear blowing up.

Of course, the quality of science and subject specific education that goes into this speculation of mine is on a par with that which gives rise to Elvis being alive, Obama being born in Sicily, and all sorts of things.

Worried,

I always thought it was either due to Thighs or Mams suddenly covering their ears -- hah. It happens to me a LOT!

We have all pretty much known the following:

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Viagra:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; memory loss; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; painful or prolonged erection; ringing in the ears; seizure; severe or persistent dizziness; severe or persistent vision changes; sudden decrease or loss of hearing; sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes.

So it doesn't suprise me that these side affects can be long lasting.

I took Viagra during my recovery last summer (about 10 pills total). Tinnitis (ringing in my ears) started during that time or shortly thereafter, I have had tinnitis 24/7 since then (but no noticeable hearing loss). I also had the temporary blue light and stuffy nose side effects too.

I've been noticing louder tinnitus lately while taking Levitra.  Definitely have NOT been noticing prolonged or painful erections....or even brief and pleasant ones.

unfortunately for me the combination of CIPRO - prior to surgery and afterwards - and viagra/cialis for penile rehab - pushed my occasional tinnitus (often aggrevated by cipro use for sinus infections and such) over the edge and now appears to be permanent... my two docs - urologist and regular G.P. were not aware of it and noted it down on my charts - and even the hearing test doctor was surprised at Cipro being another culprit ( though he know about the effects of ED drugs on tinnitus)....

-allegedly gingko biloba can help some people - it calmed it down a bit but not completely - also... stress can make the tinnitus worse ....

Squirm, yes, tinnitus arrived with the blow out.

The only time I've felt sorry for myself at losing the ear was that summer sitting late at night on the deck of my cottage out in the wilderness and a few tears rolled down my cheek when I realized I'd never be able to hear silence again.

Hope 1, I have the ability to hear noise with the ear, if it is very loud, but I can't make out voices, or music, or anything, no matter how loud.

I understand if I have the ear totally killed --- say with an implant --- the tinnitus would go away.

But, I've learned to live with it and mostly only notice it now when I lie in bed, or think of it, such as right now, when it is a loud nasty buzzzz. I suppose I'm a bit like my grandmother who lived 100 feet from a rail line and never heard a train pass.

Hope 1,

Three, four times I'm aware of mine has gone away for perhaps 30 seconds to a minute before ramping back up again. It's like sipping a 100 year old Scotch. Exquisite pleasure for the moment, then it passes with memories to warm.

Generally, when it comes to PCa, or the ear ringing, I try to remember that I have a number of friends looking up at the grass from the wrong side who would give their eye teeth to be me with "just" PCa and a little ear ringing --- and I remind myself that sometime in the next day to ? years be 'blessed' with eternal silence. Bring on the ear ringing!

I lost the hearing on one side 15 years ago because of a small tumor. I didn't notice any effects on my good side from the ED drugs. All deaf and half deaf don't even begin to compare.
I found the tinnitus declined over time or maybe I filter it out, however, noisy rooms can be particularly bothersome. On a day to day basis the lack of directional hearing is the biggest pain. I never put a phone down where it doesn't belong because I can't find it by the ringing. I've searched all over a desk for a cell phone only to eventually discover that it was actually behind me.
