Father age 78 has PSA of 9 and sent for biopsy?

My father who is 78 had a recent PSA of 9 and the Uro is sending him for a biopsy. I'm not sure this makes sense considering his age. Even if it is cancer, what treatment would they recommend? He is is good health. Any observations would be appreciated. Also please advise of any recommended readings that may discuss this topic. Thank all.

I think a biopsy makes sense.

I hope the biopsy is negative, but if it ends up he has a relatively mild case of PCa, the doctor may recommend active surveillance with no current treatment. But if a severe case is found, there are treatments that can substantially slow down the progression, extending your father's life.

With the biopsy, your father could very well know his condition, and what options would be appropriate considering his age and medical decision. Hopefully, it will come back negative, muting the need for any action. And if it is positive, and it's low grade, the best thing to do might be to practice AS, and keep a close eye on the cancer as he continues to age.
