I thought I would post a brief update for others who are on or contemplating AS. It has been about
a
year and a half since I was diagnosed and I am still untreated in any way other than slight diet
modification (greatly reduced dairy, no beef). My PSA has been between 2.5 and 3 the last few times it
was checked.
I returned today to see my primary urologist. He said we could keep monitoring for now and it may be a couple of years before I needed treatment (how's that for a surgeon?). As I have said before, he is "OK" with my choice of AS though it was not his initial recommendation.
So, in a few days I should have my latest PSA and will post it here. If the PSA velocity suggests, (>.5 ) he will do another biopsy. Stay tuned.
be well...

Good report, Dan, you are turning out to be a good poster boy for AS, which is a good thing for those that qualify. Gosh, I only wish I had that for an option after my diagnosis. For all those with good numbers, they should strongly consider what you are doing.
Good luck on that next PSA, hope you can keep on your AS path for as long as possible.

I am officially envious. I had hope for AS but that was not to be for me.
Keep us informed on the PSA which we all hope will be just as good.

Dan, congratulations. Hope it stays the same for many more years. Also, please do come back and give us updates. We don't have many AS guys and it's good to get the first hand perspective.

Thanks for the update, Dan. I remember your post from last fall when you were “wavering.” Are you familiar with Dr Pete Carroll’s work out of the Univ of Calif at San Francisco (UCSF)? Carroll did a study where he took 100 guys with biopsy-verified low-risk prostate cancer (just like you) and split the group in half. The “control group” half made no lifestyle modifications whatsoever, and after one year their PSAs progressed (increased; unfavorably) similar to how the general populations might be expected to progress without doing anything different. The “experimental group” half made three lifestyle modifications: diet/nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction. After one year, their average PSA actually decreased (favorably). If you know how to read statistical box plots, THIS chart with the results is quite remarkable. For more info on Carroll’s work, here’s an easy-to-read ARTICLE , or here’s the study’s REPORT . Good stuff to keep in mind while you are making daily decisions and trying to “stack the odds in your favor!” Best wishes…

I'm following a similar path and similar diet. Recently had an MRI and PSA (no results yet) and scheduled for an upcoming biopsy. Not looking forward to that last item, but that's the way it goes. I find that I'm much more relaxed since I've found a urologist who will support me in this. (And I'm also encouraged that he is probably the top urologists in my city.) I'm also very encouraged by video-logs from Dr. Snuffy Myers. Hope I can keep with this plan as long as possible but realize that there are no guarantees.

I finally got the results yesterday.......2.9 hmmm, that is up slightly, not sure what my urodoc will say. He might want to do another biopsy. I will let you all know.
Thanks for the encouraging words everyone, they really mean alot.
Casey, I do recall reading a study about
lifestyle modification in PC patients, I am not sure it was from Dr Carroll. That did lead me to adopt a no beef (which I have only broken a few times) and low dairy ( I still eat cheese but use Almond milk now) diet. My PSA went down initially but seems to be rising slowly. As for exercise, not enough, for too many reasons to list, but my BMI is about
23 which is good.
Dreamer, I remember reading your posts. We are on similar paths for sure. I hope the MRI comes back clear. I never know what to hope to find from another biopsy as not finding more PC is kind of a mixed blessing. Anyway, be sure to post the results of the MRI and upcoming biopsy when you have them.
be well..

Good luck.I was on a short a.s. run.It only lasted 1 month. After my pca3 came back high, and endo rectal mri showed a 1cm hot spot where the biopsy didn't have a + hit, his suggestion was surgery.
So now I'm scheduled for surgery next month.Being 40 I was hoping that I could get a little more time with my prostate, but it wasn't in the cards.
