COMPILER--surgery tomorrow

UPDATE-- NOT GOOD, BUT...

They are keeping me in the hospital for tonight and maybe longer.

Remember, I was wondering if this really was the GB? It was, in a big way.

I did not get to talk to the surgeon today but I will tomoRrow. He did talk to Cheryl and the report was a shock.

Apparently the gb was so infected that I had a gangrenous gall bladder. They almost had to convert to the open procedure, but they did not.

Needless to say, I have plenty of questions. The pain is pretty bad, but heck it's surgery. I expect that to improve greatly. I was still able to walk around and stay on my feet for about 2 1/2 hours. But I can barely move now!

TODAY WAS THE FIRST DAY I HAD NO FEVER!

I owe a debt of gratitude to my regular doctor. At my physical yesterday, he really pushed me to see the surgeon THAT day and he made a personal call for that to happen. Also, it took a good surgeon to be able to do this very difficult surgery (no longer easy), so I'm glad I picked the best.

I suspect I'm not out of the woods, yet and I will need a lengthy period of antibiotic tx. I'm nit sure if the gall bladder was even intact. I'll know more tomorrow

that was a real close call there for sure. the dr. that wanted you to have immediate surgery was definitely in the right thinking..


glad you got that taken care of before the damage spread worse. enjoy the hospital time, and take those pain meds if
offered.

Sorry I missed this eventful thread. Sounds like you are one lucky guy. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Did they do Lap. Surgery in the end??

Mel - it was good to get that thing out. That sounds like what happen with my father - he did fine after surgery but I suspect you're in for a bit of recovery time. I had my GB out about 3 years ago and it was about a week before I felt like I was really recovering.

Let the hospital take care of you as long as they will. Take the pain meds - there is nothing like gallbladder pain - and keep the fat in your diet down for awhile.

Timing was very important then, gangrene and eaten up by infection....ugh....sounds terrible. Hope you get out soon, hospitals get old real quick, but you were wise to see this one through and you knew something was really amiss. You should do very well hereon out, so back to the PCa issues and hope those also get smoother sailing for you.

Well done Mel. Gee, our stories are almost identical (minus the gangrenous part ----- a real risk of Septicemia there). I never had the slightest hint of a problem either till 4 days before having to have emergency surgery. The good part is it is now gone, you are on the mend and back with us. I don't know that it applies to all but I have not modified my diet in any way and don't notice any difference pre or post surgery. Good to have you back.

Oh my goodness, Mel!  That was a close call.  I told Ron what happened and he couldn't believe you didn't experience long time pain.  He thought he might be having a heart attack, and we went into the emergency room.  From there, it was surgery the next day, and he was in for 3 days.  A close call like yours, but no gangrene.  How terrible, but the worse should be over shortly.

The hospital will provide you with a list of approved foods.  After awhile, it will be a matter of trial and error in what you can tolerate and enjoy.  Take care and wishing you a speedy recovery!
