Well, I'm home. Still in plenty of pain, but doing okay.

I am now on 2 antibiotics: CIPRO and FLAGYL. This is going to be tough. I have read really nasty things about flagyl.

Has anyone had experience with flagyl.

I was running on adrenalyin last 2 days but it hit today.

I did get to ask more questions. His opinion: this silent stone I had for 20 years suddenly blocked the bile duct. GB swelled and that's when I had the classic pain. Swelling somehow cut off supply to gb. That's when gangrene set in, pain declined a LOT, fevers started.

There;s plenty more details, none worth discussing here.

I've cancelled classes this week and I am arranging for a sub for the next 2 weeks. It's going to be a long, slow recovery.

My next PSA was set for Wednesday. I may make it the following Monday. That might also be my next appointment with this surgeon. He has been superb: highly skilled (thank goodness), informative, and took plenty of time.

No experience with FLAGYL but glad that you are back home. Wish you a speedy recovery.

Glad you hear you are on the other side of surgery. What describe is very much like what happened to my father. I am not sure what antibiotics he and to take but I know they upset his stomach as long as he was on them.

It took me a good 2 weeks after surgery before I was up to getting back to work and then another 2 months before I felt like myself again. Start short walks as soon as you're able (even just a few laps around the house) - that really helped me.

Mel,

Most tolerate Flagyl well.  The most common side effects are GI and metallic taste.  Long term use has rarely been implicated in causing peripheral neuropathy.  There are several drug/food interactions with Flagyl including the interaction with alcohol (this recently has been disputed) that theoretically can make a person very ill.

I would assume you would be on antibiotics for only a week or so.  I doubt you will have any issues other than mild nausea.  I have taken both antibiotics without problems.

Glad you are home and on the other side of this surgery. What do they have you on for pain control?

Unfamiliar with Flagyl other than hearing the name before.

After my infamous pancreatitis/gall bladder event 30 years ago, I was never able to tolerate spicy or heavily fried goods again,
so I guess the gall bladder had some purpose in my body.

Well, I already had a problem with SE. I started getting tingling/numbness in left hand and right foot.

Called the doctor and he said to stop the flgyl and continue on the cipro. That's what I'm doing. Hand tingling had gone. Still having foot problems.

He prescribed narco (like vicodin) for pain, but I didn't need to fill it. I am in a lot of pain, but tolerable and if needed I'll use ibuprofin.

The next 72 hours are kind of crucial as they always worry about infection, especially in my case as they had to poke a hole in the gb, have the bile suctioned out, before they could remove it. This ruined a sterile field and they had to do a lot of lavage to it.

Right now, it reminds me of my RP recovery. Plenty of pain and PLEASE DON'T SNEEZE OR COUGH! (Fortunately, I haven't had to.).

My next PSA was scheduled for Wednesday, but I do have a surgeon appointment on Monday and I'll get the PSA at that time.

Jeez Mel, my daily chores and worry about the trip to DC seems like a walk in the park compared to what you are going through.

Sure hope things start looking up for you soon. Hopes for a speedy recovery from me to you.

Hey Mel, I had the gall bladder attack from hell a few years ago and the wife found me on the bathroom floor moaning and got me to the doc. His comment was the difference between a gb attack and a heart attack was if you you`re wishing for death thats a gb attack. Man he was right it was unreal. I have a physical job and went back to work in 3 weeks and was real careful for quite awhile but didnt have any problems. I do have one lasting issue now that my gb is gone and thats occasionally food will go right thru me. Big time cramping and feeling like you gotta go now! Quick trip to the bathroom and all is well again, def seems to happen when to much fatty food is on the menu. Good luck, Tim
