partial testicle removal for advanced PC?

i know this guy who was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer which has spread to his bones.  i believe his PSA at DX was 200.  i talked to him briefly last night and  he says his doctor (county) gave him casodex for a month and then switched to lupron.  he said he only has a few radiation treatments left and then he'll have surgery and discontinue lupron.

what? 

when i dug a little deeper he said he was having radiation for bone mets  and the surgery was to remove small parts of the testicles that produce testosterone.

what?

does this sound familiar to anyone?  this guy while very intelligent is a bit 51/50 so i'm not sure if what he is saying is accurate.

it is my understanding that the testicles that produces testosterone not just parts of them - an all or nothing scenario - and if the guy is 50/50 in approach - he may be trying to fill in gaps to please you - since you know more about PCa than he feels he does.
- he may not want to admit the doc may want to physically castrate him.

-good luck with clearing up the confusion.

I don't think Ed's friend fully understands what is being removed. The suggestion for an orchiectomy is not unreasonable for very advanced cases. But that's a full removal of the testicles. I agree with Bronson, he needs to ask more questions.

Yeah, never heard of a partial physical castration before. I am under the impression, that its an all or nothing thing. They can put in "falsies" so that the scrotum has the look and feel of the real thing, more for physological reasons I think. Must be a misunderstanding, or only hearing part of the story.

i suspect the guy is just saying that.  i know when i first talked to him after his grim diagnosis he didn't know much about the disease but this time he knew what he was talking about and that's why his claim surprised me.

he also seems to have an amazing ability to compartmentalize his woes, which i admire.  maybe having a screw loose is a blessing or maybe it's different when he's alone.  anyhow it's a very sad story.
