In anticipation of my RARP, scheduled for April 11, someone suggested that stock up on incontinence supplies now, so I don't forget later. Can you fine people recommend brands, types, etc.?

Depends ;) what you mean by 'stocking up'. You may be one of the luckier ones who only need supplies for a short term, and only a few a day. After the catheter came out, I used only about 3 pads a day for about two weeks, then two, now only one. So all told not a huge expense.

I get TEENA FOR MEN, I found that these are the most comfortable. I buy them in a box of 48(?) for about $22 (US).

I wouldn't go crazy at first. Also remember that Boxers dont work well with the pads, You'll need breifs.

PS, are you using NJ center for PC and Uro in Hackensack/Maywood?  Thats who did mine.

As Tenpin says you don't need to be over proactive buying too many pads in advance. Buy one package at a time, usually they come in 48 or 52. You could be one of the really lucky guys getting your continence back quickly.

I am 3 weeks post catheter removal today. I have been very fortunate to be dry every single night. I had no control at all fduring the day for the first 2 days. But I have seen significant improvement each week to where I have full control from a sitting or lying position to get the bathroom to drain off. My next phase challenge is to get control while standing and walking. As you will experience your pad usage will "depend" on your fluid intake and your activity. Remember when you go out to pack some extra supply to change on the go! Don't look for improvement day to day but wek to week. I found at this stage it is easy to let yourself get down, but keep a positive attitude with you, take in your stride day to day and if you can find the lighter side of life dealing with this until you are continent again.

I didn't enjoy the "rubber snake" experience, but acceptance and attitude will carry you through this short term experience.

Let walking be your friend as you recover and don't over do things, even when you think you can.

Forgot to tell you, make sure you take advantage of the next 3-4 weeks prior to your Sx to do your "kegel" exercises everyday, they will pay you back after your Sx.

Walgreen's has their house brand stuff (Certainty) on sale for $7.99 a pack this week (3/11-3/17). If you need guards after surgery, theirs are the heaviest

Tena men's pads are still not enough for me, unless I change a couple of times a day. I am still a Depend's Guards user most of the time.

BIG fan of the Walgreen's Certainty guards! And that sale is GREAT right now. I cleared out their rack a couple days ago.

Post surgery, my wife unknowingly bought me a TENA or Depends overnight pad for women (can't remember which, but I think it was Depends). The store she went to didn't have the TENA pad for men. I used the women's pads, but did NOT like them. They bunched up in the crotch, making them very uncomfortable at night. I switched to TENA and loved them, but soon I started increasing pad usage, so switched to Depends Guards (more absorbent). Worked great, but expensive. I decided to try Walmart's house brand (didn't like them... too cheaply made... leaked). And then Walgreen's. LOVE the Walgreen's Certainty... except my only complaint--- they don't cover as well as the TENAs. The TENA is just a better design. With the other pads, if I "dangle" to the left or right too much, I'm sure to miss the pad sometimes.

I JUST looked at the TENA site, and it looks like they are redesigning their pads. I see now there are "TENA Men" Levels 1, 2, and 3. I have NOT seen these in my local stores. This is GREAT news for people who like their fit better... although I'm sure they're still too freakin expensive. :(

Also-- I didn't see anyone mention this, but I also bought a pack of blue mattress "underpads" (they are cottony on one side and thin blue plastic on the other). They are used frequently in doctors offices. We really didn't know what to expect as far as overnight leakage, so we went with extra precaution. My wife also bought one of those waterproof mattress protectors that are commonly used in cribs (they are rubbery with a cloth front and back). I used that the first night after catheter removal, and HATED it. The rubber caused me to sweat and was just too hot.

So, this is what I've got on the mattress: a regular, fitted (washable) quilted mattress cover, then an underpad, then the fitted bottom sheet on top. I've only leaked once in 4 mos now...GLAD I used the underpad.
