This is intended as an FYI for anybody that may have
advanced/chronic pain.
The other evening I went to lecture given by a physician that is a
specialist in the treatment of Pain.
This particular physician was trained at Hopkins and is currently
associated with a large academic center. If you have advanced/chronic pain, you
should obtain a consult with a physician that dedicates 100% of his/her career
in the study, diagnosis, and treatment of advanced/chronic pain. I was unaware
of several options that are available.
Another interesting observation was how important Quality of Life Issues
are, and how Opiate intervention is not the first or second medication treatment
choice in a significant number of the cases.
Other medications are valuable in treatment of pain with a reduction of
pain perceived by the patient by 30 -50 -or70% without the severe impact that
opiates can have on QOL. In addition,
Interventional approaches (Ultrasound guided injections, Spinal Cord Simulation,
Pulsed Radiofrequency and SNS blockade) are becoming very advanced. It was a very eye- opening
evening.
