The author of this slide deck did such a great job presenting this stuff to me that I change my thoughts about the "Integrative approach" to oncology. I also joined the Society of Integrative Oncology as a patient/advocate. Integrative oncology is the concept of treating the mind, body, spirit instead of just a tumor. This concept is based on the premise that we all have cancer cells but living a healthier life both prevents cancers and also improves quality of life after a diagnosis of cancer by using complementary and alternative medicines to treat symptoms and side effects while still using conventional therapies to attacks the cancer. If anyone here has any questions about a slide or more, let me know. I've seen this presentation a few times over three years, with minor adjustments, and I might be able to answer.

A note about the third slide here. This is a very busy slide that is hard to read. Dr. Lawenda says he didn't intend for it to distract from the overall picture but it provides an overall glimpse into integrative oncology. Each of the points are described later in the slide deck.

Thanks Tony for sharing this with all of us. It just makes sense to address all the other issues while tackling the tumor. By chance, did you figure out if you could record your monthly meetings and post them here or somewhere else so those of us who can't be in Las Vegas can benefit?

If not, could we do a call-in and participate via a conference call?

I could get a conference call number set-up that could be used by anyone who wanted to listen in and participate. There are systems that facilitate the discussion in addition to making any power point slides available that the presenter is using and can be coordinate to match the discussion.

tony, as usual, good information on an important aspect of cancer

they don't use the same term as your thread is titled, but at the oncology rehab that i belong to ,they practice the same ideals and methods as described here, as to treating all the different sides and aspects of a cancer patient.

Thanks for the insight into Dr Lawenda's perspective.

I think that most other folks focused on integrative medicine believe that the Standard American Diet it the problem, not the solution.

Hour and a half?  ouch!   I read the book.  Is there anything in this that is different than the book (I suppose that only someone who has both read the book and seen the 90 minute video can answer that)....because (apparently in contrast to Dr Lawenda, per your earlier comment) the "Anticancer" book is strongly against the notion of the Standard American Diet as being healthy.

In fact, here's a great quote from Dr Servan-Schreiber (author of the "Anticancer" book) from an interview about the American Diet:

  • Interviewer:  How does the traditional American diet create conditions for cancer to thrive? 
    •  
  • Dr Servan-Schreiber:  Look at the American national dish: hamburger and french fries, with a white bun and ketchup. You couldn't do better if you wanted to try to promote cancer growth: red meat (the No. 1 food ingredient associated with a variety of cancers), grown on corn and soy (which remove the healthy omega-3s that are found in grass-fed meat), and bovine growth hormone (which stimulates all cell growth, including cancer cell growth); french fries: a rare vegetable that does not help slow cancer growth but, on the contrary, stimulates insulin release and thus cell growth, dipped in omega-6 inflammation-promoting oil and fried to increased oxidative stress; white bread: which again stimulates insulin release.

Yea, I haven't read the book but I know RalphV has. But then I don't think he saw the presentation.

I am against the term "Standard American Diet" as it is not a standard in America to eat an unhealthy diet. I prefer the "Habitual American Diet". The properly balanced nutritional diet proposed in America by virtually every medical institution is not much different than anywhere else ~ we, as Americans, just tend to not adhere to it...

I always like presentation better than books. Especially when the author is presenting. He touches on points quite well here, and even if it was in type, the word of mouth comes across clearer.

That’s that fallacy of the “moderation” mantra.   Eating crap in moderation is not a healthy diet.   We as a society in this country have completely lost perspective.   Only a couple McDonalds hamburgers a week is considered “moderation,” along with getting a regular sized order of fries rather that SuperSize.   Surprised to hear from you that Dr Lawenda is “ Absolutely ” in favor of this type of diet. Casey we are not connecting well and I never said Dr. Lawenda is in favor of a diet with two McDonalds burgers a week. Nor am I. Moderation means that none should overdo anything. If someone wants to eat a healthy salad they need to do so in moderation. Too large of a portion is not moderation and will still lead to obesity if carried on over time. He, and many nutrionalists, use the term moderation to remind us to not radically consume too much of certain elements in our diet. Red meat is not good in many ways but it's much worse when it's on the plate every day in large portions. If someone is putting two ounces of meat on their salad couple times a week it's much better than eating a 16oz. sizzling steak 4 times a week.

So the use of my answer "Absolutely", should be taken in response to your question about using moderation in the "Standard American Diet" in the sense that if we eat what is suggested we eat by our doctors, use moderation. But if your question was does he recommend moderation in our "Habitual American Diet" I would bet he would say something like "We gotta start somewhere, but that's not enough".

Again your use of the term "Standard American Diet" is very ambiguous.

Anecdotally, this stuff doesn't work well enough because we can always find cases to the contrary. My friend Sherry Galloway had a son who was a Vegan marathon runner who contracted prostate cancer at the age of 34 and died by the time he turned 36.

Another case is Ronald Reagan. He lived a very healthy lifestyle and he surely added years to his life. He died at 94. His case raises another point ~ as we encourage people to live linger, and they are, new causes of death will emerge. In Reagan's case he had Almheiser's disease for 14 years. I would be willing to say they were not the best 14 years of his life...In spite of a healthy lifestyle, QoL was dropped heavily by other diseases that certainly will set in if we live long enough.

One could use these cases to show us how it doesn't work to live a healthy life. But they would be wrong. Very wrong in doing so.

I did 9 months of a macrobiotic diet after my surgery. It was one of the most difficult things I have done in my life to the point that I said to myself: "Ralph, if you are going to die, you are going to die". I stopped the diet, but became mostly vegetarian (I eat fish). And I am happy with that...

I thought we would be able to discuss this potential life saving topic without distractions, but I was wrong. I will close this thread with one thought.

I hope that members to this terrible diagnosis understand to keep an open mind and heart about addressing their diets, exercise, and mental wellbeing. Integrative oncology is about doing more than just treating tumors and in some way virtually every physician acknowledges this at some degree. There is a slide in the deck that points out that as much as 70% of cancers in the US are preventable through lifestyle decisions and I believe that to be true.

Here is a list a fantastic academic institutions that have changed their cancer programs to promote this approach.
