permission to whine

Sirs, mams, whoevers,
I am not enjoying recovering from hernia surgery. The pain killers make me fuzzy, give the worst case of cotton mouth and cause industrial strength constipation. I was afraid I was going to pop another hernia having a bowel movement today.

Everything hurts. Soup to nuts and especially the nuts or rather the area around the nuts. I don't want to complain but they could have at least shaved all of the hair, not just half.

I can sit or stand for hours but moving between the two positions is a new experience in pain. I thought my dentist could cause pain but dentist know nothing compared to a surgeon.

and now that I am starting to feel just a little bit better I realize that I am bored out of my mind. Just how many WWII movies do you think I can watch before I start screaming like a lunatic (my wife says 2, 3 if she's given me two pain pills). I'd like to go play in my workshop but my wife claims all my tools are too heavy for me to lift. I'd go check myself but it's almost 60 feet from my living room chair to the shop and really hard to find. I tried going there but got got lost near the freezer. My wife claims she found me an hour later on the swing seat out back eating a Popsicle. I don't recall eating a Popsicle but I do seem to have a purple stain on my tee-shirt and she really should keep the windows closed it's very cold in this house.

It's so bad that in the last two days I read the last 200 pages of Moby Dick. I think the painkillers made it a better novel. Perhaps it's the pain pills but I am now trying to figure out why the book is listed a great lit. Well, at least I now know how to hunt, kill, field strip and boil a whale. Might come in handy some day...

The worst part is that the most interesting thing I can think of doing is logging in here and writing non-helpful posts.

Anyway, just wanted to ask if you guys mind if I write a really whiny post about my recent surgery.

Sorry you're not a having wail/whale of a time.
When you want to or need to move does it help if you can you apply pressure to the aching area with a small cushion or a small rolled up towel.
I have discovered recently that I can relieve constipation by gently massaging a bit of pile ointment like Prep-H into my anus, and then having a quiet sit down with a book about half an hour after the next meal I eat.

sorry to hear your trauma - my Dad went through 5 hernia operations - SO BEHAVE! - the last one was the clinic that guarantee 100% success and it actual took.
-keep in mind all the nerve endings in that area which are very confused by having surgery there once again.
-it will get better
-you have kept your sense of humour
-you got both of your nuts - my Dad lost one of his due to inflammation on hernia op #4 - cut off the circulation and when the swelling went away - so did the nut....
-and once again - SO BEHAVE
-the tools in the shop will be there waiting for you to return when you are well and able to swing them around your head like a power hungry Arnold Whatshisface ....

Surgery is a big deal, and you have earned the right to whine. Hope your recovery goes quickly and smoothly!!

Ahhh...does that bring back memories.

I had an inguinal hernia repair in 1988.

I remember returning to teaching very soon after. Big Brave Man.

I thought I was doing okay. I couldn;t move too much, so for once I sat behind the desk and taught.

It was fine untill the end of the period and I tried to stand up to leave. I think it took 10 minutes to get from sitting to standing!!

Eventually, it took 3 weeks, things got better!

David, I'll go whaling any time with you but I suspect the harpoons weigh more that 10 pounds so I'll have to wait till next month before I can sign aboard...

andrew, no harpooning for you, forgot about how heavy they are. you can come as a guide and tourist.

when i think of surgeries, having had 9 in less than 4 years, they each wear you down, a bit at the time. do take your time recovering, be a good compliant patient, take your pain meds as needed, and forget about lifting that harpoon until you are fully recovered

It was a long time ago, but I still remember needing pain pills more after laproscopic inguinal hernia surgery than for my RALP last year. You post did get a hearty laugh - well done.
