I was, however, a bit surprised that according to the BBC he said he is having surgery with only a local anaesthetic!!

Elf, my guess is that he is having a spinal...guess you would consider that local.

I had a spinal and did not suffer the side effects many do from the General.

I had open surgery, no way a spinal was on the table as an option.

Perhaps, going back to the article, that's the best they can do in Columbia. Would love to know
his specs and biopsy report

Choice of anesthetic seems from the article to have to do with Presidential powers, passage of responsibility, things that have nothing to do with patient comfort.

Again... I had a spinal and had no issues. They also had me in twilight. The last thing I remember was getting positioned on the table and the OR nurse asking me if I wanted a pillow.
My surgeon said utilizing the spinal aids in a quicker recovery. They utilized the same port for my pump pain medication following surgery. Worked beautifully.

Leaving the country might open some risks. Things are not too stable in that part of the world.

Leaving the country for medical treatment might also be seen as insulting to the country's health care system (though I realize some other world leaders have left their countries for treatments).  There are things a leader might consider that the rest of us don't.

My husband had RP and had a spinal as well as a general.
Our surgeon stated the spinal would keep him comfortable as he came out of the general for a couple days as it did.
