I read an article on thyroid disease the other day. I started thinking about the thyroid problems I had 7 years ago or so and the similarities between PC treatments and AS. I had a hyperactive thyroid, the opposite of what most people had (hypoactive – which is treated with Synthroid) When I went to the endocrinologist, he gave me two options…surgery to remove or radiation to destroy and then, either way, take Synthroid for the rest of my life. I had to ask if there was any medicine that would control it. He said there was, but it does not usually work. I tried it and it worked. Then over time I went from having too much energy to having too little, so I started taking a ½ dose. Then the same thing happened and I cut the meds out altogether. I had blood work done and on the appointment he said everything looked good and to keep taking the meds. I informed him I had stopped. This was at least 7 years ago and I have not had any problems since or taken any meds since. All my thyroid levels are fine…ok, now that I jinxed it they will probably start again. My point is that the doctor wanted to operate or eradicate my thyroid with radiation and put me on meds for life, when all it took was to help it regulate itself, and then I was okay. Not that my thyroid turned out to be as serious as PC, but I just think doctors want to do what they do a little too quickly. Sometimes I think you have to slow them down, be your own advocate and do some research to get what’s best for you.
