Tough days

6 1/2 years ago my husband (then 35 yrs.) was diagnosed with end stage prostate cancer - had already spread to his bones. He was offered hormone t. which helped for a good stretch but started failing just over a year ago. Now his liver has become involved. Nausea, bone pains, incredible weight loss, weakness...Tough days for our little family - daughters 12 and 9 years who have displayed remarkable resilience through it all. Hard to watch someone you love go through so much pain and not be able to do a darn thing to stop it.

Bettymarie, my prayers are that you all find the strength to deal with all that you're going through. Your daughters sound strong, indeed, and I'm sure your husband can feel their strength and draw encouragement from it.

That is a difficult situation to deal with.

It's so hard to watch someone you love suffer and be powerless to do anything. Hopefully there are some medications that can provide some relief.

You're on my prayer list.

My prayers are with you although I'm not religious. Stay strong and continue to give your beloved husband the support that he needs. I don't know what to say except that I'll cry with you and your children..

Breaks my heart to read a thread like this with someone so young. Bettymarie, it is hard to be strong all the time, but sometimes you have to be for the kids and your dear husband. But when you can, take care of yourself. It is very important.

We all here are like a huge family and we welcome you and yours with open arms, to offer all of the strength and support you need. Yooper said it well, we are here if you need a shoulder to lean on, cry on or just punch.

Is he seeing a good doctor who specializes in PC??

You just mentioned HT. But when that fails there are other things to try. Sometimes, second line HT actually surprisingly works.

There are other newer drugs out there.

I'm not sure if any of them would work (given the spread to the liver), but that's why maybe an expert could give you advice.

Where are you located?

This is really sad -- if I read this correctly your husband is about 41-42 years old.

I am suppose to be a brave and strong man, but as I read your post, I stated crying for you and your family. This hideous cancer has no compassion at any age, let alone at 35 when you husband was diagnosed that started the family's PCa journey.

I so hope you have family close by and wonderful neighbors to lift you through these painful days and for the painful ahead of you. You know by now that you have friends and PCa family all across the world here on HealingWell to reach out and ask for support in any way that we can. Even though we are men, this disease has softened our hearts and increased out compassion and has made us all better human beings because of it.

My wife said the other day, that when she dies, she wants to ask God why in his perfection that he created such a frail organ that can cause men to loose continence, rob them of the ability for intimacy and rob them of precious years with their spouses, children and grandchildren.

Thank you and all of the other wonderful spouses and partners out there that are there for us as we fight this cancer. We could not do it without your love and support. We know that there are many times when you cry in private so you don't show your worries to us. I have told my sweetheart many times, that it is easier to be the one with the cancer that my sweetheart who has enough to worry about raising the children and grandchildren without having the added stress and concerns.

I have added you to my daily prayers that the heavens can and will provide you with comfort and peace as you weather out this storm. Thank you for being there to support your husband and one of our brothers. Please let us be here to support you and let us return our love and appreciation for all that you are doing and will be doing in comforting your sweetheart.

May God bless you with the strength that you did not know you had that will assist you in the weeks and months to come.

I cannot imagine what you have been going through. All I can say is that I am praying for your family, and praying that your family will not weaken, but grow in strength through this ordeal. Your husband is lucky to have you by his side.

I'm so sorry about your husband's situation. It is difficult to watch someone you love suffering. I hope his doctors are able to reduce his pain with medications. I'll say a prayer for you and your family. Stay strong for him and for your daughters.
