raditaion for prostate and bone mets or not?

Mayo is suggesting no radiation for the prostate or the bone mets. Medical Oncologist tomorrow.

Since we are not covered they said that the radiation would be $50,000-$100,000 but there is no scientific proof that it extends life

Does anyone want to weigh in???

Since you are Canadian, what does the Doctors there say? Can you get radiation and hormon therapy there?

My understanding of bone metastasis is due to the location and size of the lesions each case is different. However there are cases where bone metastasis can and have been treated successfully with radiation. Dr. Meyers covers this in the video I have shared here.

I have just gone through this with MDAnderson in Houston and this was my understanding of critera for RT. You should have PSA around 0.5 on Lupron and Casodex. The best time is the window between 6-9 months after diagonsis. You should not have distance mets. Sorry but think bone mets are distance mets. The bone scans seem to be very subjective or hard to read. That is why you see readings like " most consistance, most likely, possible,ect". They are not good and far from being profected.

Thanks all. Let's see....

We have conferred with our specialists at home (they will continue the care when we go home) and they have concurred with the treatment plan laid out by the Mayo. We can go home for any treatments which wold then be free but since the treatment plan at this point it ADT....it is cheaper than the flights....we plan to continue our winter in Arizona

The Mayo is suggesting Lupron and Casodex with possibly bisphosphonates in the future.

Apparently, there are 3 possible met sites and a possible additional early site and some suspicious areas in some soft tissue.

This might make us outof the definition of oligometastases?? Houseboy I did read the thread but am new enough that I am not sure if I have read it correctly

I forgot to mention that he has no pain associated and they have suggested that he is "early" in his disease. I was unclear how bone mets could be early but maybe that is because no treatments have been tried yet

As I understand it, the definition of oligometastases is less than 5 mets and is based on a Study done in 2004 in Rochester. See: http://advancedprostatecancer.net/?cat=1125 for a layman's background description.

Unlikely you will find a Radiation Oncologist in Canada who will do this targeted radiation outside of a Study.

The article in the December issue at p. 3 describes the C11 PET CT scan with Acetate that is available in Phoenix where you are staying for the winter. You will find Dr. Almeida to be very knowledgeable and generous with his time. Might be worth a visit.
