High level of Creatinne after robotic prostate surgery

Hi, my husband had robotic surgery two weeks ago. Creatinne level was normal before surgery now it is high. 1.76 dropped down from 1.86 but is not going down. Dr. has him taking a Nm Renal Lasix test next week to see what could be wrong with kidneys. Anyone else have this?? Thanks!!!

What is creatinine?

Creatinine is a chemical waste molecule that is generated from muscle metabolism. Creatinine is produced from creatine, a molecule of major importance for energy production in muscles. Approximately 2% of the body's creatine is converted to creatinine every day. Creatinine is transported through the bloodstream to the kidneys. The kidneys filter out most of the creatinine and dispose of it in the urine.

Wife, the first thing that comes to mind is "is your husband drinking enough fluids?" My thought is that he's 2 weeks from surgery and probably has had the catheter removed. If he's dealing with some incontinence, it's possible he's restricting his fluid intake to avoid leakage.

During his physical a year ago, my husband's creatinne level came back elevated and his MD told him to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. His next blood test came back within normal limits.

Just a thought. Hope things improve for him (and for you) soon.

I agree with Sephie -
he is probably dehydrating himself (in order to reduce leakage) which can cause higher creatinine level - which for me, lead to problems with kidney stones ( a crisis last October) ...
-also, check on his amount of protein in his diet, as well as nuts, dark greens like spinach ....

I too, agree with Sephie, sounds like his kidneys aren't flushing out enough of the wastes and toxins. Drinking plenty of water, in particular, is essential for this process, especially after a major surgery.

Some men, post catheter, think that if they drink less - they will pee less, thus leaking less. Not a good plan, better to flush much, even if it means leaking more in the short term.

You got to get that stuff out of your system, could leave to further complications.

Hi, he still has the catheter in, as they had to reconstruct the bladder because prostate was so big (90cc). he really is drinking alot of water. His surgery was Jan. 8th so it has been 18 days and the Creatinne is still 1.71

Hope your doctor is keeping a close eye on this. We don't hear a lot about this problem after surgery here.

My father had a couple of surgeries (not prostate) and always had some kidney problems post surgery. Once he'd recover from the surgery he'd be fine but his kidney function was always boarder line.

Could be just the trauma of surgery has caused a reaction. Hopefully it will get better as he heals from surgery.

I have had a renal lasix scan. Here is a big heads-up on that:

They had me drink a lot of water. Then, I was prepped and put on the scanning table. For the first 20 minutes, I could see the flow through my kidneys on the screen -- interesting. Then, they infused me with the lasix, for the next 20 minutes. The flow really increased! By the time I was done, I was dying to go to the bathroom. I went again in the hospital lobby. Then, on the way home (my wife was driving and it was a 15 minute drive), I told her I could not make it home without peeing. We had to stop at a fast food joint that was only 5 minutes from our house. Safety tips: 1) Hang around the lobby and use the bathroom multiple times before leaving. 2) Have an empty jug in the car just in case. Here is the kicker: I had a nephrostomy tube and a leg bag for one kidney. The other kidney was emptying into my bladder. I was filling both my bladder and the bag! Without the bag, I am sure I would have had an accident. Have him wear dark pants. :-)

More seriously -- other discussion questions for the doctor: Is he having any flank pain that might indicate a blockage of some sort? Have they did an ulltrasound or CT scan to look for hydronephrosis?

I have a history of high creatinine, and was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. Its not as bad as it sounds, because it's stable and I've been able to lower it to 1.2 through diet, exercise, vitamin d, and a couple of pills my nephrologist has me on. He said the important thing is to keep it from progressing.

To your point, I had a prostatectomy and it had no effect on my creatinine values one way or the other, except for normal fluctuations based on how much water I drank. So it could be that he has a kidney issue that he'll have to watch, and has nothing to do with the surgery. Once he's healed up, maybe he should see a nephrologist.

Thank you all for your messages. My husbands levels were normal before surgery so the thought is a reaction from some drug he was given. Maybe it will just fix its self. We will know more after Tuesdays test! Thanks again!!!
