My husband has advanced PCa and it has metastized to his spine so we find this article enlightning.

Bud,

So far my husband hasn't had any pain, however we did a ultrasensitive PSA which showed a rise. Our Oncol. is repeating all his scans, then we will come up with a game plan. He also ordered the traditional PSA, as he feels the ultrasensitive is too much info. to get one upset as that is what happened this time to us.

Have you had pain?

Thanks for the info. I have mets but at this time have little discomfort. Just had a density scan and will meet with the Onc about biophosphates.

Thanks for sharing this info. My DH has quite a few mets, and we are looking at the radiation possibilities to lessen the pain and get him off the heavy pain killers he is on.

Thankfully no pain. I did start getting zometa infusions right when I was diagnosed and continue to get then once a month.

I've had the scans with the tracer and while there has been no progression there has been some clearing on the bones.

For what its worth, I agree with your doc - ultrasensitive is too much info. Especially given a PSA can vary slightly.

At last count I had 10 of em in upper skeleton. My psa at its worst was inMay/June of 12. so it looks like nothing very advanced yet. Actually my hormone treatment has given me the most discomfort of all with joint pain and general fatigue.

Im a VA patron and wonder when it would be advisable to get another scan.

Just a reminder, if you were a Vietnam vet please make sure that you are receiving benefits! Some vets are not aware of this.

Bud, What is clearing on the bones?

Susan, Radiation was suggested by UCSF and that may be our next course of treatment, but will wait for the repeat scans next month.

Pepsiguy, Will also address bone strengthing meds with our Oncol.

It seems opinions vary on the frequency of scanning. We went to Kwan at Mayo initially, and I got the feeling they believed in scanning at regular intervals to track progress (whether it's the cancer's progress, or our progress in beating it back), to guide treatment. Dr. Myers is our doctor now, and he said he wouldn't scan again until symptoms indicated we needed to check in.

Also, he monitors markers of bone activity via bloodwork (maybe everyone does, we only tried two doctors) -- one that is a marker of bone breakdown, as a means of assessing ongoing bone invasion, and another that is a byproduct when bone is rebuilding. I don't know exactly what the markers are called -- I didn't ask in that initial meeting, and also couldn't figure it out by googling the various measures on the lab results. But might be worth asking your doctor about if it isn't something already being discussed.

Good article and able to be understood by a "layman"....

Husband on Xgeva, not as invasive as Zometa (Xgeva is an injection but Zometa is an infusion). Has been on the Xgeva for several months. Our doctor is 2nd opinion oncologist, PSA started to rise had scans (CT & bone), found that had mets (spots), original oncologist wanted to start on Zitiga, nothing else discussed. I had searched the web about everything regarding prostate cancer, have several sites and alerts to advise new meds or treatments. Knew about other options available, that was why went for 2nd opinion. Scans every 3 months.....

After 8 taxotere sessions now om Xtandi (this is our first month) our cost $1000.00 copay and $7600.00 billed to insurance company....but we are 13 years into this disease..so we are breaking all of the odds... you can see by the signature our travels thru this disease sine November 1999.

Do you have any links to any of these sites with current or updated treatments or meds? Will discuss with our new Oncol. after we see if there are any new Mets. Hope Xtandi continues to work for you.

BOOGEE...I have an alert set up on Google for anything that mentions about Prostate Cancer....also go to Blue Cure on FaceBook.....
Johns Hopkins has a web site with information....just Google and you can come up with multiple sites...but be careful and don;t read too much...it will worry you sometimes more than it will help!
