blood in urine - 3yrs after RT

I was hoping that it was an infection or radiation cystitis,  but the urine test showed no infection and a urine cytollogy found some "urothelial cells" which may indicate a "low grade papillary urothellal neoplasm".  In order words more cancer??????

Anyway, spending time on google and waiting to see my urologist later this week. I'm sure more scans and a uretha scope are in my future.  Google indicate that if it is a tumor, surgery is the next step,,, but I am way ahead of myself here.

Geez, I'm only 51

Keep the faith brother - don't go driving yourself mad jumping to conclusions, wait to see the urologist.

Keeping Faith, this sounds so much like my situation! 42 treatments IMRT, 2.5 years ago, five months ago all the problems started, burning and blood in urine, bladder spasems, they thought kidney stones which it was not, on a cystiscope the found tumors and a badly damaged bladder and everything tied to it. After surgery and months of pain they have me in hyperbaric chamber for 80 hours, 2 hours per day. My thought is careless tecs giving the radiation as with the new systems they are suposed to hit the mark withing millimeters. Again I would never chose that route. Stats were G7 stage 2. One hyberbaric chamber treatment left tomarrow and they will doanother cystiscope to see how it has healed. Had ED but Viagra worked well, now after hyperbaric no ED or burning when unrinating or ejaculating. Only side effect now is must usinate every 1/2 hour and am on Vesicare which pretty much takes care of it. They will do a cystascope on you and see what he inside of your bladder is like and take a sample to see if cancer, mine ws not cancer in the tumor they removed. The systascope sounds worse than it is not bad at all. Hang in there we will pray for you!

I had my SRT back in 2004, since then I have had 3 episodes of substantial bleeding in my urine.....passed lots of blood clots as well. Each time my uro did a cystoscopy and radiation damage was seen. So my advise at this stage is not to panic.BTW, the cystoscopy is a piece of cake....the night before the first one I drank lots of vodka cause I was petrified...had a huge hangover the day of.....didn't hurt one bit, subsquent ones just as painless...not to fear.

I was passing a blood clot every now and then and having up and down trouble urinating..A scope exam found a bladder stone which the uro removed and after a few days on a catheter, no problems since...

Thanks all for the responses. I have a CAT scan scheduled for Monday and then the cystoscopy on the 15th.

John R - wow, what a road you traveled. I am hearing more and more about radiation damage than I ever imagined. I certainly didn't do enough research beforing going with the IMRT back in 2010. I guess at this stage I'm hoping for radiation damage (seems a better alternative than a tumor). Glad your tumor was not malignant.

Thanks all for the comfort on the cystoscopy, I am terrified of that test (the little guy has been through so much in the past couple of years!!). I also have a very vivid memory of getting a nasty nasty urinary tract infection after they removed my foley post surgery. ( I will never forget, its during the 2009 World Series, I am a huge yankees fan and it was Game 6. I'm in screaming pain, a burning piss every 5 minutes, trying to get hold of the surgeon or nurse to get me some relief . Finally get hold of the nurse about the 3rd inning, she changes my antibiotics (the cipro didn't work), my wife runs out to a duane Read to pick it up, I down the new pill around the 5th inning and begin to feel relief just in time for the final out)

ZiggyMonster - I can't agree with your self medication routine, Scotch (Macallens 18) would have been a much better alternative. But they are putting me on antibiotics 48 hours before the test, so I'm not going to risk it until after test.

I just went through a cystoscopy on Monday of last week.
You can hardly tell that they are scoping you. You will feel some irratation but it is not as bad as you would think.
You also get to watch on the screen if you want .
Minor leakage for a couple of days.

Well just finished my tests. The CT scan of the bladder and kidney were clean. The cystoscopy showed 4 areas of radiation damage in the uretha. its an amazing procedures (after you get over what they are doing to Mr. Johnson) I watched it on the screen as they fed the scope all the way into the bladder. I also watched as they identified the 4 areas of scaring, they injected clear fluid and watched as it turned red. Radiation damaged is better than a tumor, so i am happy.

Most likely a different scenario, but I had a DaVinci RRP followed a few years later with 32 trmts (64 gys) of SRT... Sometimes, when I am constipated and have to bear down much harder than normal during a bowel movement, I will get an amount of blood in my urine. It clears up immediately, within a minute of not using pressure. The first few times it occurred, I was concerned and questioned the doctor at my next visit. I was told it was the pressure against some minor scar tissue at the location where the uretha was joined back together. Never causes any pain... Routine urine tests indicate no blood found in my urine. I have learned to not bear down too hard... Another minor side effect in my particular case...
