Correlation between PCa and other health issues?

Anyone know if studies have been done to correlate PCa to other health issues (aside from expected side-effects such as ED and incontinence)?

This one is wide open to interesting discussion. A few ways to look at the question:

1> Side effects of treatment.

2> Causes of prostate cancer that can be related to other health issues.

3> Metastatic prostate cancer and it's effects on other organs and bones.


Do you have anything specific you'd like to see?

I'm trying to answer this question:
I've had PCa, so now what other health issues should I be extra careful to watch out for?

I'd also watch for colorectal cancer, which I have had. I have seen suggestions that PCa and colorectal cancer are linked, but this may be nothing more than the same lifestyle factors leading to both cancers.

Colorectal cancer, if caught early, is curable without side effects.

Man, I see it entirely differently. I don't ever look for trouble. I look to live every day harder than the one before. If anything, the cancer that I HAD taught me to live for the moment...no time to worry about what might go wrong tomorrow. Just my way of dealing with it.

hard to have that outlook when you're diagnosed in your early 40s and your whole understanding of personal longevity is flipped on its head.

If nothing else, having PC makes many men much more aware of their general health condition, which can be a good thing, if it makes them adapt healthier choices with eating, smoking, exercise, etc.

I agree with that. It does seem easier now to make positive choices ie exercise/diet. I look at it more as a celebration than a prevention. I've been given some extra time, and I'm going to spend every second of it in high gear.

I would think that for long term HT patients you should look for Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, both of which I have after 6 years of HT. Depression, definitely, as well as other psychological disorders. Like I wonder if you are truly cured you might be susceptible to PTSD. Bladder issues, urethra issues are another two that come to mind . . . Q

If you look at how quickly some guys here respond to comments it's tempting to add OCD to the list of possible psychiatric problems.

As Quincy indicated, it may be more due to the ADT treatment than directly to the PCa itself, but cardio readings, weight gain, bone damage etc, plus hot flashes as a friendly reminder the Lupron is still actively at work.

On the plus side, a wake up call that makes some of us more diet and exercise conscious than when we previously rationalized it away as one of these days I should get serious.

I would have to say some conditions are dependant on the treatment undertaken.

For HT the aforementioned depression, increase in certain types of cancer such as colon-rectal cancer. Increases in visceral fat can affect LDL/HDL ratios and blood sugars, making one susectable to insulin resistance which in turn can lead to diabetes. This then can increase certain endocrine based cancers and heart disease.

RT increases ones chances of developing localised cancers where the RT was directed.

I wonder if bladder cancer is related to PCa.
