On one hand - it's a supplement and probably wouldn't hurt to try... On the other hand - ask your doc before proceeding.
What is it the active ingredient in i-cool™?
The active ingredient in i-cool™ which allows DSM to make these claims is geniVida®, a non-soy genistein that has been tested for safety and effectiveness in four animal studies (1-4) and five human studies (5-9). The human intervention study upon which the menopause relief claims are supported was conducted with 84 North American postmenopausal women who received 30 mg of geniVida® genistein (99% pure, non-soy, non-allergenic) or a placebo for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks the women on geniVida® had a mean 51% reduction on hot flashes and night sweats compared to only 27% for the women in the placebo, a highly significant difference (5). Moreover, an 85% reduction in hot flashes was achieved by 25% of women in the geniVida® group. Additional high quality and independent scientific support for the effectiveness of pure genistein in menopause relief comes from three Italian studies which showed a range of hot flash reductions from 31% at 6 weeks (10) to 57% at 12 months (11, 12).
Furthermore, an in-home use test was conducted by the Red Hot Mamas, a menopause support group. In this study 210 women with menopausal symptoms not on hormone replacement therapy were given a three month supply of a menopause supplement containing 30 mg geniVida® plus calcium and vitamin D and asked to complete a Green Climacteric Scale survey at the start, at 6 weeks and at 12 weeks. After 6 weeks, 50-90% of the respondents had significantly improved menopause relief and further improvements were recorded at 12 weeks. At the start almost 80% of the women completing the study were extremely or quite a bit bothered by hot flashes and night sweats and by 6 weeks this percentage had dropped to 31%.
