Sure, do what I do in situations where I want to avoid hurting someone's feelings -- make SOMEONE ELSE be the heavy.
In other words -- in this particular situation -- simply tell them, VERY nicely & gently, "Doctor's Orders!"
That will disarm & neutralize any type of argument that family members & friends might offer in trying to visit him. Simply say that the team of doctors says that only YOU are allowed to be around him -- meaning that other family members & friends, for Danny's own sake, cannot be around him so he cannot pick up any potential bugs prior to surgery.
Then just tell them that they will be most welcome to visit him after he has sufficiently recovered from the surgery.
In this manner, they cannot blame either of you. You might even explain this to the doctor so that s/he backs you up on this.
I hope my suggestion is something that might work for you. :)
In the meantime, wishing him the best in his upcoming surgery. Seems like he has been placed in a very good situation to receive the best of outcomes.
Take care,
Chuck
