Has anyone changed investment strategies based on learning they have prostate cancer?

I stopped investing in Trojans and started investing in I pads. My next investment maybe in online forums…….. Im a contrarian.

I agree back with you. We pay cash for as much as possible, and try to plan ahead for big things, like a new roof, or new HVAC for the house eventually. Right now, our mortgage with tax/ins is less money than renting a 2 bedroom apartment in our area, so no complaints. When I was put on SSD, my already low property taxes were cut in half, if I ever get my VA claim approved, it will totally eliminate property taxes. In SC, if you are disabled vet, you pay no property tax on your primary home plus up to one acre in land.

For years, we always pay for Christmas's and Trips (like our Cruises) in cash in advance, wouldn't want to be in debt for either to be honest.

When we bought the house we are living in, back in 2005, a commercial banker that owed me big time, found the house in foreclosure (before that became fashionable), it never went on the market, so my offer was less than 40% of the current appraised price at the time. Then, I finally used my VA mortgage benefit for the first time in 35 years, so got a really sweet mortgage out of the deal. Unless I win the Powerball, we are staying put.

Yeah, would love my dream house, but at my age, being disabled, and not wanting to burden my wife with debt when I am no longer around, we are content with what we have.

Debt is not allowed in my family. No, not religious reasons. My GG-grandfather loaned money to people before the War of Northern Aggression, and his widow was not repaid. I keep the names of the children of those thieving criminal lines in a notebook. I like buying their property at tax sales, then selling it to their enemies.

My great-great grandfather actually acquired most of his wealth via property tax sales.

My great grandmother on my Mom's side lent some money to people after the great depression. Have some funny stories there that I'll save for a later day. Savvy business woman she was for her time and generation.

I don't fear debt that is attached to an income producing asset.

I don't like other forms of debt though.

Huge pet peeve is getting a medical bill for .88. Between a stamp to me and a stamp from me, I just can't wrap my brain around it. smhair

Yes, I am keeping a large term life policy in effect that I had planned on letting expire. Kids are grown and with the ability to work I didn't need it. Now, since my ability to work may be compromised in the future and I can't get life insurance, or at least not a reasonable rates, I am keeping the policy.

The other change is shopping for annuities. While I am waiting a bit for interest rates to move back towards a more normal range, I understand that there are annuities that will take heath into consideration. Think of it like the backside of the insurance game. An insurance company would charge more to insure me since I have cancer and statistically have a shorter life expectancy. So there are insurance companies that will sell an age adjusted annuity based on heath of the applicant. My broker is currently researching for me.

See another upside to this dang cancer :-)
