New Update: 02-11-14: Something finally found

After waiting 6 weeks for an upcoming important VA meeting at the outpatient clinic, it has now been cancelled and will have to be re-set. We are getting snow (rare here) as I write, but the big storm is to hit tomorrow, the day of my appointment. Suppose to get from 4-10" of snow, plus freezing rain/sleet on the tail end of it Thursday. This area will be shut down tomorrow, I am certain.

Said it will be the biggest winter storm since the Great Ice Storm here in 2005. I lost power for 3-4 days, and had a frozen and flooded basement to deal with. Long as we dont' lose power, we can handle things, as I have wood as a backup for our natural gas heat. Last major snow here was 2003, the year my father died, got 12" plus in Greenville, shut down half the state of SC. We could hardly make it into the parking lot of the funeral parlor for his burial. The motel we stayed at lost power, and we stayed in a cold room, eating cold food. No fun.

Anxious for my appointment on Monday with the Spine doctor, to get his take on that special MRI, and see where we go from there.

I lived in Dallas for over 20 years and hate ice covered roads.

Praying for you & all other folks.. especially to not lose power !! As Jim said, I am also older & wiser - stay in place when roads are dangerous.. have driven on black ice several times & will never willingly do that again.

Also prayers re:the results you will be finding out about on Monday.

This week is anniversary of my mother's passing - weather was not as serious as when your dad passed but snow & ice kept many folks, especially older ones, home from both viewing & service... we saw several tractor trailer trucks that had slid off road on trip down & I gritted my teeth & closed my eyes (son drove). Any lesser occasion & I would not have made the trip.

Growing up my parents alway had a woodstove - still concerned re:froz pipes but not about froz toes etc !! Eaten many a meal of pinto beans & cornbread cooked on that woodstove !

I do NOT have any other source of heat other than standard HVAC.. looked at stoves that burn pellets plus several other fuels but have not done anything else about it .. it does concern me.

My dad's training re:keeping car prepared for winter weather has been passed on -by me - to many -usually female- coworkers over the years..

I was amazed to find that people do not keep even an extra blanket in their cars much less a pack of crackers, water, sand (or kitty litter for traction) couple of candles and pretty full gas tank!! When I saw those pix of folks in Atlanta spending the day in car I knew the above would not be fixing their problems but might make the time a bit more bearable..

Go ahead and rub it in, lol. It's 23 here at 1 pm in SC, and we got 3" of snow so far, not much as predicted, but storm won't end till the morning.

My wife lucked out, she didn't have to go to work. They were going to pick her up, but decided she could take the day off. I was able to get her home last night without any problems.

One northern trick I have taught all my southern neighbors, is to extend your windshield wiper blades up in the air, not against the windshield. Keeps them from sticking to the glass and being damaged when you turn on the wipers for the first time. We always keep blankets in our cars during these rare events here, flash lights, flares, etc.

Best bet, just stay off the roads if you honestly don't need to be on them. Be prepared, in our area, this snow storm was forecast a week ago.

David, up here in New York, we're waiting on a storm that's supposed to hit overnight through tomorrow. The prediction for snow accumulation, depending on which weather station you listen to, is calling for anywhere from 6 to 10 inches in New York City with a foot or more here in the northern 'burbs. This snow crap is getting old!!

I liked your comment about lifting the wiper blades up...we do that on both our cars every time there's any snow or ice predicted.

Hi David,been away for a while, have had endless doctors appointments for my wife since she had her stroke, luckily she has come through ok so far, but it has changed our life a bit, glad to hear that your specialist thinks he is onto something, I personally don't believe you would have a met there, but I am no doctor. I really do hope that they can get to the bottom of your problem my friend. Our cancelled trip to Canada, resulted in our losing the non-refundable $6000 deposit, but after much jumping up and down on my part, they agreed to keep $4650 in limbo for future travel, at the moment my wife is too frightened to fly, so don't know what will happen.

I think Travel companies have a real nerve making your deposit non=refundable, what do they do with your money/ maybe take the office for a holiday?

Hey David,

We expected and got nearly 8" of fluff snow here aorund Boone, NC last night. It was around 19 degrees this morning. Nothing new for this area. My wife and I had to go up the mountain this morning to check on the four dogs. No problem but it tired us out trudging through the snow. Also there are 22 steps to get to the kennel level:).
