Unfortunately Nietzche, himself proved that one wrong. Most of his quotes are wrong on so many levels, I'd have to be totally mad to to attempt to prove that.

I have to agree with logo on this one ... why are you making fun of the mentally disabled?

Not making fun of the mentally disabled here, just the side effect of HT that many of us who are / have been on it have experienced.

But it is a sort of thread that can go off the rails from "joke" to "fighting words" in an instant. Logo's post makes it into something that wasn't intended, so I'll just say leave it on the "making fun of ourselves" rail.

If you read Mel's post which set the context, we are talking about cognitive decline as a result of hormone therapy*. An additional factor is that some of us are not as young as we once were -- a condition also sometimes accompanied by the dimming of one's bulb. So these comments are very much making jokes at our own expense -- a variety of gallows humor. The one exception is Patrick who is both young and hormone naive (to use a technical term) but whose contribution referred to continence issues (with which he has struggled/is struggling).

*researchers who have looked to quantify the degree of cognitive decline caused by ADT have found it elusive but it is reported subjectively by almost everyone who has ever had the hormones and by almost all of their friends and family members.

Doesn't matter which end is up if you don't know which end you're on.

If I understand what you are telling me ... it is ok to use tired, inappropriate jokes concerning the mentally disabled if you are suffering from "cognitive deterioration" induced by HT.

Not trying to make you guys politically correct, I am trying to point out that some of the jokes you get a kick out of are based on terribly hurtful stereotypes of the mentally disabled. Guess the subject hit too close to home. Sorry for running on. Moving on. Bye.

Actually, I dealt with many students who has AS (Asperger's Syndrome ). This is a high functioning form of autism. Some of these students (actually, many) were very bright, doing well in advanced algebra and even calculus classes. As long as I maintained a routine, they were fine. Anything out of the ordinary, and a high degree of anxiety would ensue. I also found that any kind of subtle humor (like many of the comments in this thread) would be totally lost on these students. But most were personable and did well.

Perhaps someone here has a child or relative or friend with AS and can add to the discussion.
