Question about urinary blockage after SRT

Had surgery 5 years ago and SRT three years ago. PSA is undetectable but now have blockage in the urinary track. Doc was unable to get the scope far enough in to determine exact cause, so it's off to surgery next week.

Question - has this happened to anyone else-what should I expect after surgery and how successful was this. Doc said the blockage was caused by radiation - but three years later??

My husband had urine blockage after davinci prostate surgery.  He had two outpatient surgical procedures before he was able to properly void. The problem was scar tissue. The procedure took less than an hour, was done on a Thursday, catheter removed by Monday, and he did not complain at all.  This was eight months ago and he is doing great!

Hi Les,

The surgery causes scar tissue where they cut the urethra. The radiation on top of that causes further buildup of scar tissue. In susceptible individuals, the buildup can increase over time (sometimes with sloughing off and bleeding in between) until the opening will no longer permit urine flow.

I think the procedure can be done with a green light laser and perhaps using argon plasma. It's something you may want to look into.

I had the procedure done with surgery 3 times post surgery, and 4 times post radiation, and each time, they quickly failed. My uro said he had never seen anyone that could scar over as fast as it did. They never were able to keep my bladder neck open for more than 30 days before scarring shut.

In the end, due to severe radiation damage to my bladder and bladder neck, I ended up having my bladder by-passed with an Urostomy, via the ileal conduit surgery. Now I have a stoma for life.

Hope you fare better than I did. For most men with stricture issues, 1-3 attempts is usually good for a permanent solution. Just didn't happen that way for me

LV-TX:  I had the issue you have after RRP and SRT, it occurred last May.  I was dialated and so far so good but if it reoccurs there is a 100% chance of it happening again and again (google abstracts of urethral stricture disease.)  Also your uro will probably have you self cath after the surgery, I refused to do that because of the downside risks of causing false passageways and trauma to the uretha.
