1st Biopsy one core positive, 2nd Biopsy Negative...

Well, there you have it. My first biopsy last December was positive in one core at 5% and the second one last week resulted in all twelve cores being negative. The UR just called and gave me the good news. So, it looks like AS will continue for a spell. I've been on the finasteride since last September, so maybe it helped some. Either way, I'm happy with the results for now. So, it's check the PSA every three months and hopefully no more biopsies for quite a spell. At this point, I figure any treatment would be over treatment. Hope I'm right. Thanks for listening...Ed.

There's a very good chance that the Finsasteride/Proscar is responsible. This has happened before with others. Just stay on AS is my advice.

about half the men with very low risk PC taking Proscar/Avodart find their cancers are undetectable on follow-up biopsy. Congratulations!

If your cancer is small, the biopsy procedure can easily miss it...Especially with the Finasteride helping out...Just keep track of your PSA velocity, get it checked every 4 months, and stay the course..

Glad to hear you get to stay on AS. Hope you get to stay on that protocol for a very long time.

I wonder why my urologist never recommended finasteride for me. My Dad had PC, and I have enlarged prostate of 60 grams. My PSA kept moving up and I asked him about taking it. He did not think it was a good idea. Based on this 18 year study perhaps if I had been taking it for the past few years I might not have had this small cancer I'm dealing with now. I'll show him the study and ask him on July 17.

Thanks for the well wishes. AS it is for the time being. I wish the first biopsy had not shown the 5% in one core. It has caused me a lot of grief and learning about prostate cancer is no fun!

Good news but don't forget that the A is AS stands for "Active". Biopsies miss stuff, including repeat biopsies.

I was on finasteride for ten years due to BPH but it disguised my Gl 9 PCa. I'm not a happy camper. Johns Hopkins I believe recommends against its use.

Bob,

It seems to have done the opposite for you - as I look at your PSA pattern, it revealed your PC rather than hiding it. Because it is so good at getting rid of the PSA from BPH, any rise while one is on it must be due to other causes. So if someone is taking it and his PSA does not go down, or goes down and steadily rises (as yours did in 2011), it is a much clearer indication that PC, and probably higher grade PC, is the culprit. Finasteride/dutasteride then improves the diagnostic accuracy of the PSA test.
