My husband just had his prostate removed a week ago and has been having terrible attacks of pain after bowel movements or passing lots of gas, up to three times a day. Pain is excruciating and slowly subsides over an hour or more. Never heard or experienced this before. Has anyone had this or know of someone who did? Need help.

You should call the doctor.

Is he still taking the pain meds? The pain meds can cause very bad constipation and straining to go could make the pain a lot worse. That's a possibility. He may need stool softeners while recovering.

There could be other things going on but best to ask the doctor.

Ditto that, call the doc stat. Despite taking the stool softeners, it took me a couple of days to go, in the meantime I was only eating soft foods like milkshakes. But when I did go, it was more like diarrhea(sorry TMI I'm sure), but I was immediately struck with hemorrhoids such as I had never experienced. This pain and bleeding was by far the worst part of my surgery recovery, and it took me many days to get back to semi-normal. I later found out this is not uncommon after an RRP. I figured it was because everything was so swollen, which just lead to swollen rhoids. My surgeon said it was not. But I later read that it is common due to some veins that they staple.

If this is not what is happening to your husband, you want to make sure it does not. If it is, you want to get some treatment for it fast. Either way, call your doc!

Two days after I was discharged from the hospital, my wife and I went out to get a hamburger, fries and a drink. That was the biggest mistake! What ensued about an hour later was excruciating pain in my bowels. It hurt so bad that I could not sit down. The only relief I had, and it was slight, was to lay down on my back. I even took a pain med but it didn't help. I sincerely believe that my pain was related to what I ate and from that point forward returned to my diet of bland, easy to digest foods. You might want to give that a try.

Wow!
After RP the biggest pain is normally from gas and constipation. It's vital to take stool softeners as your bowels won't move due to effect of anasthesia. Your whole GI system is asleep. The first BM is a massive relief! Then it improves daily to whete it's not a problem.
