Newly Diag and comming to grip with it continued

Not sure why but I can't post to my previous thread (https://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=35&m=3201121 ) so I will continue it here.

The second opinion came back on my pathology report and it was lowed to a six (3+3) so I will continue as planned with AS.

I did notice that there were 14 samples/cores in the report but only 12 were taken. Seems strange to me. Anyone else have that happen?

It may be that a couple cores fragmented in handling. Thus more samples than cores.

You're doing great. Stay with at AS as long as you can. There's a lot of thinking out there now that G6 doesn't need to be messed with.

I'd ask the doc about the core thing. I had it the other why - they took 14 samples but the URO didn't like two for some reason and told me he was only sending 12 to the lab (they had to change needles after a while and I think he sad two didn't have enough tissue - difficult to remember what he said with that machine up my backside).

Update, my PSA is 2.87, down from my original PSA of 3.0 but it was done by a different lab so it is statistically no different. More tests planned.

As someone that had G6 and enlarged Prostate that made me a poor candidate for AS I envy your shot at AS. Stay with it as long as you are safe. Have as much sex as possible, its not the same after surgery....

Thanks for the information. I appreciate all that offer their experience/perspective. I am single so sex is not routine but it is strange how not being able to do something is way different than not doing it. Especially when it is taken away. This is all something that there is no way to understand it unless you have been through it.

I have further tests coming and my continued AS is dependent on them. In the mean time, I am taking better care of myself and appreciate everyday. Keep working at it. Another thing I have learned is that it takes a long time to get back to normal or near normal (previous non cancer surgery)

Follow up information:

Current status should be in my signature so I will not repeat it here. 61 at diag. Everyone is different in their medical history. family situation and personal view but for me, it has been a good year. I understand the risk in AS and weighed it against the various treatments and associated side effects. I should say AS means ACTIVE as in not just waiting. The protocol involves PSA/DRE every six months and biopsy every year.

My reason for posting now is to emphasize what I learned in this forum. It is said over and over but given my experience, I do not think it can be said too much. Learn all you can about this disease and GET A SECOND OPINION. I doubted it was worth it but it is. Even if it confirmed the first diag and recommended treatment, it is worth having a second opinion. Another thing I learned in my research is the various treatments that were never discussed with the first Urologist/surgeon. If you are a hammer, every problem is a nail. That fact helped me make the decision to get a second opinion.

I am not a medical professional so this is only my experience/opinion.

A recent research article from Johns Hopkins showed that the patients involved in their AS program have a 99.9 percent rate of NOT dying from prostate cancer over the 20 year study.

Now, JH has strict criteria in their program, but it sounds like you are into something similar.

So, stay the course, and be assured that, if the cancer should later upgrade and need intervention, that you are not losing time or risking mortality by being in the AS program.
