Inguinal Hernia Question

I had an inguinal hernia repaired about 5 years ago and now am in need of another one on the other side to be repaired. I am now 3.5 years out with undetectable PSA. My question is: Would surgery in anyway jeopardize my PSA coming back to life. We've all heard of someone with cancer being operated on only to have it spread more when air is exposed to it. I'm just wondering if there is some PSA lying dormant that hasn't formed yet, that surgery may would jump start something, causing the PSA to change , either open or laparoscopically. No pain with it yet, just some bulging. The hernia was there prior to my surgery by the way and was brought to my attention when being examined by the Urologist. Any thoughts?

Kwoo, exposing Cancer to air and it spreading is a myth, ain't goin' to happen. PSA does not lie dormant, it is produced, either by benign Prostate cells or cancerous ones. The decision to repair the hernia should be between you and your doctor, it can actually kill you if it becomes strangulated. (Hernia ruptures, intestines fall in gap and are "strangled") With your numbers I would be more worried about the hernia than the Cancer, but that's just me. Other folks will be along I'm sure.

The PC is dead. You can't bring it back to life.

Get your hernia fixed.

I had mine fixed 6 months after radiation and my PSA is still falling.

I agree with the others about the myth of surgery spreading cancer.

Or you can look at it this way:

My PSA on August 15th was 11.97, and that was while on Lupron and TAK700. It was also an increase from the test before in May, where it was 8.0. In August I stopped taking the TAK700.

I had surgery for an inguinal hernia on August 27th. In October my PSA was 9.9 and in November it measured 8.8.

So you might say that surgery lowered my PSA. NOT!!! So you can see that there is no tie between surgery and PSA going up or down.

kwoo -- My hernia surgeon put it to me like this, "You're not getting any younger, and your hernia is not getting any smaller."

I'm scheduled for my 4th hernia repair on December 3.
Two before my RP, and two after.
I'm still puttin' up zeros!

Since they're remodeling down there ... I'm asking for wall-to-wall mesh this time :-)

My current hernia is an umbilical one -- an incision site hernia from my prostatectomy. ( I previously had an inguinal one fixed years and years ago. ) I'm getting it fixed in January.

If you gotta have a hernia, umbilical is the way to go. So much easier to truss up while you wait for your surgery. With my inguinal hernia I had my a55 in a sling for several weeks waiting for an open spot on my surgeon's schedule.
