Hi Everyone:
I have seen a couple of mentions of late about mindfulness mediation and mediation in general. I wanted to echo what some others have said about how beneficial this can be and bring it up to its own topic, rather than an add on to some other heading.
My husband registered for a mindfulness meditation course in the late winter/early spring of 2014 that was built around the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program. He registered for this class before prostate cancer was anywhere in his vocabulary and actually had decided to take it as a way of trying to help his improve his sleep in the months immediately after managing his mother's significant decline over several grueling years and subsequent death. The class and the timing of the program wound up being wonderful for him.
Part way through the program he received his first elevated PSA reading, followed quickly by a confirmation elevation, the biopsy and the rest as they say is history. This program helped him so much to get through what was a very difficult 3 1/2 month period between the first PSA reading and his ultimate surgery date. He was focused, relatively calm and very much in the moment. He continues to do his yoga, meditate, listen to his tapes to this day.
I really can't speak highly enough about his beneficial this has been to him in helping to manage the impact of his diagnosis and treatment and would encourage posters to the forum, particularly newbies who are just getting their diagnosis, to look into something like this in addition to all of the other due diligence you are being encouraged to undertake. This can help make the rest of it seem more manageable
