Ok, so I woke up in the night with a burning question (don't bother asking where it came from).

It goes something like this: When a patient goes in for RP (robotic or open), during preop they put the foley in. Once the foley is in, how to they remove the prostate without taking the foley back out? I expect they split it in half and take it out in two pieces, that's the only way that makes sense to me, then I would think they would use the foley as a support when they reconnect the urethra. I'm going to have to ask the surgeon.

I watched a RALP movie, only do that after surgery...

if I remember correctly they used the catheter to locate the urethra so they could guide it to the bladder neck to create the anastomosis (spelling???) Something like push the catheter tube in a little and where it pops out the cut end of the urethra is where they need to make the attachment.

I didn't even realize that the catheter goes in during pre op. Makes sense though

My Foley was not put in during pre-op, in fact the last time I went to the bathroom was in pre-op. I walked down the hall with my IV's and went to the bathroom for one last time, the old fashion way, before surgery.

The prostate is brought up last in a little bag through the large incision above your navel. Kind of like a tea bag.

After my surgery, I requested and received my "Surgical Report" which tells you what they did and in what order. It was pretty interesting reading. They did a "time out" just before surgery which is when everyone tells who is present in surgery.

Big Mac: my daughter is a scrub nurse. She's told me that the "time out" is standard, and the scrub nurse is the one who says, "the patient is John Doe, he is 56 years old, and he's here for a Robotic Assisted Laparsocopic radical prostatectomy" And then, interestingly enough, SHE is the one who gets to tell the surgeon that he can start.

I know my catheter went in after I was anesthetized, I was assuming that was one of the things that happened in the hour or so I was in the OR before surgery started.

Ok, maybe this is TMI, but it is interesting to me.
