I saw a comment above that said, " Prostate Cancer is among the most common and least lethal of all cancers."
So true, and yet somewhat misleading. Something like 30,000 men will die of prostate cancer this year....only about
6,000 fewer than the number of women who will die of breast cancer.
I cringe every time I see someone tell a newcomer to this site to "Take a breath, you're going to be alright." Probably true, but only time will tell, and every case is unique.
The point is, prostate cancer can be, and all too frequently is, a lethal disease. The PSA test, in spite of its limitations, can be helpful by leading to the eventual diagnosis of cancer of the prostate as well as other problems involving the prostate gland.
You have shown a great understanding of the benefits and limitations of the PSA test. As several above have noted, it's only a blood test, and not even a diagnostic one. However, just as that wavy road sign doesn't mean that the road is ALWAYS slick, it can serve as an important warning that something bad might be occurring and that caution and attention are advised.
