Had still another of many, VA dental appointment this morning. Went well. They did a test fitting of the final prototype of my dentures. Was amazed how real looking they were, the color, slight imperfections (done on purpose), etc. Will take some getting use to, because my mouth has narrowed from not having teeth for nearly 9 months.
In two weeks, the final version will be here and fitted and tweaked. If they are made right, I will get to go home with them. Been so long, but this will be a month ahead of schedule if this comes true.
------------------------
In the morning, having to do the 250 mile trip to the VA hospital in Columbia. Meeting with the ENT team, to look at growing lump in left cheek, and to talk about
the increasing olfactory hallucinations I am still experiencing. Hoping to leave with some kind of answer.
----------------
Slow progress, but at least progress. Big full body CT scan will be done this Thursday. Then next week, back to the VA in Columbia to meet with the Neurology department.

David -
Will these be the newer so-called "soft" dentures? (As opposed to the traditional "acrylic" dentures)?
My 88-year-old aunt was fitted with this "soft" kind not long ago and she reported to us that they were vastly superior to the older kind that she had been wearing for years.

Here's to progress and the new teeth. New dentures are great. Remember, it'll take a couple of days to really get used to them.
Have a great day!!!

Purgatory,
I work at a dental school, and friends with many prosthodontists and lab techs that fabricate dental appliances. Many times we see people demanding "PERFECT" dentures. We call them "Chiclets" since they look like the candy-coated chewing gum replacement for teeth. Of course the doctors try to talk them out of perfect teeth, and instead to go with more natural looking dentures. But many "vain" patients want perfect dentures and get perfect dentures. Of course you can spot these dentures a mile away when these patients smile.

We talked about
the Chicklet look and had a good laugh. The dentist held up about
50 shades, and helped choose a natural looking color that would be age appropriate. And the teeth aren't all perfectly formed and shaped, again, very natural looking.
Not sure if they were hard or soft. I will be trying the finished product at the end of the month. Dentist said it may take many weeks or months to really get use to them, but intends to train me properly on their use and care before I leave with them. One reason the VA doesn't rush the process, this has been going on since last October when I had the major dental surgery. They want to do them right, to avoid most of the common problems.
It will be strange to have a mouth full of "good" teeth again, and to be able to chew something after all these months. I want a really good steak, a super hamburger, all kinds of stuff that requires teeth, so sick of soft or liquid food. Gee, may even help my extreme weight loss.

Purgatory, you will need some efferdent and the old (gold color) dial soap to clean your new teeth with so you might want to get these supplies, these are what my husband uses on his false teeth. My husband got false teeth earlier this year. Don't forget to ask the dentist for a cleaning brush, as well as you will need a special denture cleaning brush. Ice packs for any gum line irritation.
Hope you get the teeth soon, blessings and well wishes...
Prayers...

Multiple prayers in your direction as you handle each of these hurdles. At least getting somewhere on a few of them.

thanks. surgery a week and a day from now, won't get nervous till end of next weekend. after all my previous surgeries, shouldn't even be an issue. however.
today, after church, my left hip completely gave out, even with my cane, walking down some stairs. hit hard on my left knee against a pillar. twisted my hip, leg, and lower part of my back. only my wife saw it happen, so I wasn't too embarrassed. been hurting worse the rest of the day. this is what I am so afraid of, that my luck will run out, and I am going to end up either breaking my hips or leg or both.
really hoping the VA neuro team can find some answers and reasons, because this problem is progressively getting worse over time.
chart: my VA nurse said she would give me all the supplies needed for caring for the need false teeth, and instructions for their use. however, due to the face surgery 3 days before my dentures are to be ready, may not be able to use them until the swelling in my face goes back to normal. the surgeon feels it would be too much to put the dentures in that soon after the surgery. will have to wait and see how I am doing at the time.

Hi David, so happy that your "choppers" are nearly ready, what a difference it will make to you!! I have had false teeth for 54 years, (lost my teeth in a motorbike accident when I was 21) they take some getting used to but I am sure you will get it right.
Have not been here for a while as my wife's kidney problem flared up again, and she was hospitalised, but now she is back on track. Me, being a silly old feller have torn the ligaments in my left knee, cutting wood for the
kids, and now have to have an arthroscopic procedure soon. Has been 8 years since my operation, PSA going up, but we will see what happens.
Hope your face op goes well, and when you get those teeth working, get some hamburgers, and steak, and all the solid food you have not been able to eat.
As always my friend, best wishes to you and yours.
Regards Mal.

Good luck, David! I hope it won't take long to get adjusted to the dentures. Praying all will go well with the face surgery. You do need some good things coming your way!

mal, thanks for popping in. been wondering what's been happening with you. sorry to hear your wife's troubles continue on. hope she's doing better. no more wood chopping for you, even I had to give that up a few years ago. use to be good at splitting logs with a single hit. long ago, sigh.
while I will be having the surgery in a week, surgeon said my face will be too swollen to put the dentures in when I pick them up 3 days later. that's the kind of luck I have! I may have to wait a few days or a week or so post surgery to start using them. will have to wait and see.
thanks aimzee.
