Looking for surgeon recommendation in Cleveland, OH

I've been lurking on this forum for the past few days -- what an amazing network of information and support!

My husband, 65, is in the process of having his prostate symptoms evaluated. PSA took a big jump to 2.9 with 25% free. Urologist at University Hospital felt asymmetry on DRE and sent him for an MRI. Most notable impressions were: 7 mm nodule within the mid left lateral peripheral zone which demonstrates low T2 signal intensity, diffusion restriction and early enhancement. PI-RADS 4 - high (clinically significant cancer is likely to be present). No MR evidence for lymphadenopathy. No suspicious bone lesions noted.

We are scheduled for a guided biopsy (they will mesh the MRI with US) on Thursday, 7/9, at the Cleveland Clinic. (I shamelessly called in a favor to get the biopsy fast-tracked.) While we are trying to be positive, I want to start evaluating surgeons, should we need one. Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated. (Dr Kaled Fareed is doing the biopsy.)

BTW - father-in-law was diagnosed 20 years ago and continues to do well. Went the RT / HT route.

Suz, you'll know more after biopsy. The good news is that PC is generally slow growing and is highly treatable. There are lots of men here who had nasty diagnoses and have had many good years of stable recovery.

My dad was treated at CC for PC in the early 90's, when cryotherapy was just coming online. He had a number of really good years after treatment. And, things are much, much better now than they were then.

Hello Suz and welcome. Your husbands numbers are actually quite good so there is an excellent chance that the biopsy will not find prostate cancer. If it does, then we are here to help you. Depending on the diagnosis your husband may have MANY opportunities for cure. Don't just think "surgeon" as there are other options. But, we are getting ahead of ourselves. Let's just hope the biopsy determines something more benign and your stay here will be a short one.

Jim & MichaelT - thx for the kind & encouraging words. Can't tell you how helpful this community has been. Already realized that we don't know if our MRI was T3 or not and would not have know about getting the second opinion on the bx slides without the info here. Already feeling so much more prepared to deal with the next steps and hopefully ask the right questions.

Options are great to have, however, I'm aware that some surgeons book 6 months out and, should it turn out we need one, want to get on their radar screens sooner rather than later.

While I don't know if our stay here will be short or for the rest of our lives, I do know I'll be praying for you all daily.

Although he didn't do my prostatectomy, I'll reiterate my vote for Dr. Andrew Stephensen. I think he has as deep a knowledge of prostate cancer as anyone there. You can see his bio and research studies on the Cleveland Clinic website:

Thx for the recommendation, mr bill. Stephenson's name has cone up several times now. I'm hoping we don't ever need him or need to meet him, but good to know he's an option.
