Weird prostate awareness sculpture in San Francisco

"Bold and shocking" seem to be bywords in the creation of much of modern art, as well as the get-the-viewer's-attention-immediately approach.

If that's true, then the sculpture piece in the link below (technically, in art terms, it's an "installation") certainly qualifies.

Interestingly, the artist, who calls himself PenfoldPlant, gave no name to the piece, although he does refer to it as "a PSA PSA" (!) However, a name such as Beware the Blue Hand would certainly come to mind as well. Or how about I Left my Prostate (not Heart) in San Francisco.

As sculpture goes, it definitely qualifies as "weird," but if it does help get out the word about PCa awareness, shockingly or otherwise, then it's doing its job.

It reminds me that I should never have to have my prostate checked again, since I don't have one! haha!

IMHO it beats the hell outta the dumb bow and arrow on the Embarkadaro, and if it helps awareness, double plus!

Without the sign accompanying the sinister finger, I doubt most people would know what it was supposed to signify. Of course, everyone here would, though.

My professional (full time fine artist for 45 years) opinion is "meh". Somebody made a funny and stuck it on a public bench as a joke.

"Installations" are generally very large, meant to impress the viewer and sometimes carry a message. "Art" is made in "permanent media", which the rubber glove is not. That piece would actually be termed "new media" as it is just a stock rubber glove and a plaster cast of someones hand, very likely a current art student. (My son has a degree in new media) Of course, Placing it on a bench (where you would normally put your butt) is total corn. "PSA PSA" is another corny term - "PSA Public Service Announcement" a not-very-deep play on words. I doubt it was really meant as a serious statement for public service, as - in my professional opinion - it fails at that by emphasizing the DRE aspect alone, which most men find unpleasant.

If you want to see that and much more of the same, San Fransisco is indeed a good place to look. Manhattan is next up.

Considering it's size and location, I doubt it will still be there when Kristina and I get there. Either from theft or,,,um,,, repeated use of it's function in the real world.
