Perhaps the important take-away from the so-called "News Item" is to not be a sucker for the mass media's trolling efforts.

There's a simple solution - ignore media reports about studies. The study authors and peer-reviewed journals are usually very careful about the conclusions they draw, it's the internet and popular media that go over the deep end. They usually draw unwarranted conclusions from flimsy evidence, and are not worth paying attention to. The studies have to be done for all kinds of good scientific reasons; there is only a problem if we take action on studies that were never meant to be anything more than hypothesis-generating.
