Here's an article about an experimental type of focal ablation called IRE. Unlike HIFU, cryo, laser, and other forms of ablation, it is non-thermal and has some interesting properties. But as with other forms of focal ablation, there are many unanswered questions:

This is being used to treat recurrences of liposarcoma, my latest battle. A friend will be undergoing a NanoKnife procedure this coming Friday, and I will be discussing it with my surgical oncologist the same day to see if it's one of the tools he uses. I have to decide if any future treatments will be done at the local teaching hospital or if I feel the need to go to Dana Farber, Mass General or Sloan Kettering to see surgical oncologists who specialize in sarcoma.

Jeez. Good luck with that let us know how it goes. Is there an advantage to NanoKnife over surgery for that purpose?

I don't know many details, but it is being used more and more, it seems. There are at least 2 sarcoma and liposarcoma groups on Facebook and it's been discussed at both recently.

I had my original surgery done by a urologist (they thought it was kidney cancer going in) and I have only seen a medical oncologist since then. I see the surgical oncologist on Friday and this will be part of the conversation. This is a local teaching hospital but not a high volume sarcoma center. I need to find out what techniques this guy uses vs. how I would be treated at a higher volume center. If he isn't up on the latest things those centers of excellence are using, he won't be cutting me open in the future. I will also know more after my friend's treatment on Friday. It is significant enough that she will be held overnight and will have a catheter. Her spot is near her kidney.
