Hello,
Does anyone know if proscar and flomax needs to be taken for life?
Been taking meds for bph.
Symptoms and psa improving over the last year. Started meds Oct 2014.
Was told to take these meds to keep from having the roto rooter surgery.

As far as I know, you take it as long as it's effective and your doctor tells you to.

The improvement you noted is likely due to the meds and possibly maybe reversed if you stop.

It's a good question to be asking your doc at you next appointment.

Dr is not overly talkative, but he did say to take it indefinitely.
I'm just thinking of the long term effects of these two meds.

If the psa goes down shouldn't the size of the prostate get continuously smaller?

Yes, there are SEs from the meds, but you'd be having a lot of other problems without them. It's a balancing act between SEs and treatment.

At some point the size will stabilize and likely over time you'll have to adjust the amounts of meds you're taking.

I took them both for over ten years for bph until I got stage 3 Gleason 9 PCa. In fact proscar actually masked the fact that I had pca. Now I'm taking them both again (avodart not proscar now), so as long it keeps the urine flowing I guess it's ok to use it. My prostate shrunk down 33 grams but in the period before being diagnosed with PCa, I was urinating frequently and had ED . So don't let those drugs lure you into a sense of complacency. Keep having DREs and psa tests.

i am taking duodart which is avodart plus tamsolin(same as flomax i think). pretty similar situation as my doctors left it to me to continue or stop after the imrt and psa down to .003!! my prostate was 125 gms when pc diagnosed. came down to 38 gms in 6 months, however i have a median lobe projecting in the bladder. my urine flow is absolutely normal now and i have to make a decision. perhaps shift to avodart leaving the tamsolin part??? and wait for further reduction in the size of prostate. i wonder why the doctors are less talkative- as Rpw612 says- on such issues? it may be easy for the veterans to decide.

Monty sounds like your progressing well.
Mine was 53g now around 30g. Psa 2.5 from 8.3. Bph battle as of now.
My doc is known for communication issues.
